SXSW BUSY OPENING WEEKEND CONTINUES WITH PREMIERES

Austin, TX (The Hollywood Times) 03/13/2023 – Bottoms, a YA comedy about being a teenage queer in the angst of high school, premiered to audiences over the weekend. Directed by Emma Seligman with a script by Seligman and Rachel Sennot, the film is driven by powerful performances from Sennot and Ayo Edebiri. The movie packed powerful gut punches of laughter and hard-hitting high school antics.

Jake Johnson had his directorial debut with Self-Reliance. The feature follows a lonely man, afraid to confront much in life and thus leads a rather dull existence, when a sudden opportunity to win in a reality show falls his way—except he has to survive being hunted for 30 days.

Billy Luther’s memoir Frybread Face and Me about an Indigenous American boy, is a thoughtful exploration into childhood and family themes, touching on sexual awakening with warmth and humor. Executive produced by Taika Waititi, the film’s hero is a young boy sent to the Navajo Reservation in Arizona to live with his grandmother.
