Let me clarify!

Hey beautiful people! I’ve received some inquiries about the upcoming festival, so let me clarify: This is Sweet Baby J’ai Presents The Palm Springs Sunset Music & Comedy Festival—NOT the Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival. We’ve broadened our musical horizons to include a dynamic mix of classical, country, rock, blues, jazz, and soul. Yes, I’m affirming and claiming a night of triumph—for my granddaughter, for yours, and for all of us! Get ready to dance the night away after the show!

Yes, We Can! We’re beyond grateful for the love and support from our amazing community! Every sold-out Sunset Music Series show this year is proof of the magic that happens when incredible artists connect with passionate audiences. That synergy fuels our dedication to creating unforgettable experiences.

NEW THIS MONTH!

“I’m Not a Psychologist but…”

Reflections by Lauren

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Lauren Joichin Nile to our newsletter team! A native of New Orleans, Lauren holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from The University of New Orleans, a Master of Arts in Philosophy from The University of Connecticut, and a Doctor of Law degree from Cornell University. With over 30 years of experience as an author, keynote speaker, and consultant, Lauren has helped foster environments where emotional intelligence, kindness, and inclusion thrive. Her expertise in creating inclusive spaces ensures that every person feels welcomed and appreciated, regardless of their background. Lauren’s insights will be invaluable as we continue promoting compassion and deeper connections in our shared human experience.
Lauren Joichin Nile is an accomplished author, keynote speaker, organizational development trainer and consultant, and retired attorney.

I’m not a psychologist but…

As summer wanes, I find myself reflecting on a season of both gratitude and global anguish. While I’m thankful for my own blessings, the world’s suffering weighs heavily on my heart.

I’m grateful for my health, family, and opportunities. Yet, I cannot ignore the countless souls enduring war, poverty, and oppression. The women of Afghanistan, the Uyghurs of China, the kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls—their stories haunt me. The innocent victims of Gaza, the Israeli families torn apart by Hamas, the millions displaced by conflict and climate change—their pain is a constant reminder of our interconnected world.

While I celebrate my personal joys, I’m acutely aware of the suffering of others. The homeless, the hungry, the sick, the marginalized—their struggles are a stark contrast to my own comfort.

As a facilitator, I’ve often guided others toward personal growth and healing. But in this moment, I’m confronted with the realization that my own well-being is inextricably linked to the well-being of the world. “To whom much is given, much is required”, I hope that in addition to feeling tremendous gratitude for the many ways in which we are fortunate, in addition to feeling compassion for those who are less fortunate, we feel and answer the call to find a way to be of service to our less fortunate sisters and brothers both at home and around the world.

Remember to be kind to both youself and others.

With heartfelt gratitude, Lauren

What’s Everybody Talkin’ ‘Bout?

Neurodiversity: A New Addition to Our Vocabulary

We learn something new every day. Sure, some medical professionals may have had the word ‘Neurodiversity’ tucked away in a drawer somewhere, but now it seems like everyone’s talking about it! Our latest superhero Gus Walz—in the middle of his father, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s, DNC VP acceptance speech—stood up, beaming with pride, and shouted, “That’s my dad!” Then, just to make sure no one missed the heartwarming cue, he followed up with, “I love you, Dad.” I don’t know about you, but I’m not crying… you’re crying.

Diagnosed with nonverbal learning disability (NVLD) as a teenager, Gus has navigated life with a few extra challenges—maps and directions might not be his jam, and social cues like sarcasm can be tricky—but Gus is a force of nature. He’s turned what some might see as limitations into his own personal superpowers, becoming an advocate for others who experience the world differently. It’s no wonder he stole the show.

Sure, some jerks made fun of him—probably the same type who laughs at the wrong things because they’re missing that empathy gene (you know who they are). But Gus taught us something important: whether you’re trying to master spatial coordination or figuring out sarcasm (which, let’s be real, can be a struggle for anyone), neurodiversity adds richness to life. If Gus can steal the DNC spotlight with his heart fully on display, there’s hope for all of us to embrace our quirks, too. After all, we all bring something unique to the table—whether it’s nailing spatial skills or moving an entire convention to tears with just a few heartfelt words.

Oh, and let’s all work on being a bit more “demure and mindful”—the latest fad favorite phrase—one awkward social interaction at a time!

Artist of the Month

RACHELLE FERRELL

Introducing Rachelle Ferrell: A Hidden Gem of Contemporary Music

Rachelle Ferrell may not be a household name like some of the industry’s superstars, but her talent is nothing short of extraordinary. Those of us who know her are devoted fans. She’s like a dash of Nina Simone, a sprinkle of Patti LaBelle, a pinch of Church Lady, and a whole cup of deep, resounding soul. This exceptional vocalist possesses a rare combination of range, phrasing, and musicality that sets her apart from the crowd.

Ferrell’s career began as a background singer for icons like Lou Rawls and Patti LaBelle, which led to her signing a recording contract with Capitol Records. Her breakthrough came with her 1991 self-titled album, which soared on both the R&B and Pop charts, followed by her debut album First Instrument reissued three years later, climbing the Jazz top five.

Throughout her career, Ferrell has collaborated with legends such as George Duke, Marcus Miller, and Will Downing, and has graced the stage with the likes of Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, and Al Jarreau.

I’ve long admired Ferrell’s artistry and have been trying to bring her incredible talents to Palm Springs. A rare jewel in the world of music, she is someone everyone should have the chance to experience live.

After decades of inspiring audiences, she’s facing health and personal challenges. Your donations and prayers can make a meaningful difference. If you’d like to help you can do so here:

Rising Star of the Month

Emily V

I was introduced to Emily V’s music last week, and I fell fast in love with it. So much so, I invited her to make a guest appearance at the festival in November. She’s the perfect fusion of my love for classical music and rock ‘n’ roll. I’m not sure this is what her mother envisioned when she enrolled her sweet-faced baby girl in violin lessons, but this is what we got—and it’s fabulous.

We chose Emily V as September’s Rising Star of the Month because she is a total badass. She’s like a modern-day Jimmy Page or Jimi Hendrix, but with a violin instead of a guitar. Whether she’s playing solo or with other amazing artists, Emily V is a force to be reckoned with. She’s proof that violinists can be more than just classical musicians. She’s redefining the genre, and I’m honored to have her join us on Saturday, November 9th at the Palm Springs Sunset Music & Comedy Festival. Keep your eyes fixed on the sky for this one, because she’s a shooting star!

Rhythm & Rhyme

I was introduced to Warsan Shire, a British-Somali poet, when her powerful words were featured in Beyoncé’s Lemonade visual album. She splashed onto the scene like an artist diving off the highboard—one of the Olympic diving team! Her poetry resonates deeply, addressing themes of identity, displacement, and resilience.

Imigration, another word permeating our conversations lately, reveals in Shire’s debut collection, Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth, explores the immigrant experience, gender, and trauma in a way that is both raw and lyrical. Her work is like the emotional brushstrokes of Frida Kahlo—each word dripping with visceral honesty, connecting like Frida’s eyebrows flowing into one another.

Born in Kenya in 1988 to Somali parents, Shire immigrated to the UK as a child and grew up in London. Her work often reflects the experience of being caught between cultures.

Her evocative style and unflinching exploration of personal and collective pain have made her a voice for the voiceless and a poet of remarkable relevance.

Shire is a powerful voice that reverberates with GenZ audiences and beyond. She won the inaugural Brunel University African Poetry Prize in 2013 and was named London’s first Young Poet Laureate.

I recommend diving into her poetry once for the sheer flow of emotion, then going back and savoring it, one passage at a time. Take the time to let the words settle, allowing each image to reveal itself in layers, like a painting slowly coming to life before your eyes. Her work is visual angst—capturing the raw and aching beauty of struggle, displacement, and identity. You can almost feel the tension in her lines, as if each word is carefully chosen to evoke a sense of urgency and depth.

Home

by Warsan Shire

no one leaves home

unless home is the mouth of a shark.

you only run for the border

when you see the whole city

running as well.

your neighbours running faster

than you, the boy you went to school with

who kissed you dizzy behind

the old tin factory is

holding a gun bigger than his body,

you only leave home

when home won’t let you stay.

no one would leave home

unless home chased you, fire under feet,

hot blood in your belly.

it’s not something you ever thought about

doing, and so when you did –

you carried the anthem under your breath,

waiting until the airport toilet

to tear up the passport and swallow,

each mouthful of paper making it clear that

you would not be going back.

you have to understand,

no one puts their children in a boat

unless the water is safer than the land.

who would choose to spend days

and nights in the stomach of a truck

unless the miles travelled meant

something more than journey.

no one would choose to crawl under fences,

be beaten until your shadow leaves you,

raped, then drowned, forced to the bottom of

the boat because you are darker, be sold,

starved, shot at the border like a sick animal,

be pitied, lose your name, lose your family,

make a refugee camp a home for a year or two or ten,

stripped and searched, find prison everywhere

and if you survive and you are greeted on the other side

with go home blacks, refugees

dirty immigrants, asylum seekers

sucking our country dry of milk,

dark, with their hands out

smell strange, savage –

look what they’ve done to their own countries,

what will they do to ours?

the dirty looks in the street

softer than a limb torn off,

the indignity of everyday life

more tender than fourteen men who

look like your father, between

your legs, insults easier to swallow

than rubble, than your child’s body

in pieces – for now, forget about pride

your survival is more important.

i want to go home, but home is the mouth of a shark

home is the barrel of the gun

and no one would leave home

unless home chased you to the shore

unless home tells you to

leave what you could not behind,

even if it was human.

no one leaves home until home

is a damp voice in your ear saying

leave, run now, i don’t know what

i’ve become.

Hair-Raising Space Adventures: Suni Williams and Her Zero-Gravity Samosa Snack

Imagine the terror of waking from a dream where you’re trapped, running endlessly through space, unable to reach the other side. Now imagine that dream becoming your reality, lasting for months on end. That’s the reality for astronaut Sunita “Suni” Williams, who’s been orbiting Earth for what feels like forever. Originally scheduled for a two-week mission, a Boeing-inspired malfunction has extended her stay indefinitely (maybe Febraury).

Suni, a seasoned space traveler, Navy pilot, and proud wife and mother to her husband Michael and their Jack Russell Terrier, Gorby, is no stranger to the cosmos. Born in Euclid, Ohio, and currently living in Needham, Massachusetts, she became a role model for young women everywhere when she first launched into space in 2006. She’s clocked over 321 days in space, including 50 hours of spacewalks, making her a record-holder for female astronauts.

Despite the technical issues with the Boeing Starliner (yes, the same Boeing that had a door fly off the plane in midair, and another plunged nearly 500 feet in midair), Suni and her fellow astronaut, Butch Wilmore, have been actively working aboard the International Space Station since their arrival on June 6th. They’re engaged in various scientific research and maintenance tasks, contributing to our understanding of space and the potential for future exploration.

I’m sure her chopstick skills are getting pretty sharp as she chases floating noodles through the air. But even this seasoned astronaut is up against a whole new challenge: being stuck in space—literally. Who knows, maybe this wild ride will inspire Suni to write the next great sci-fi novel, starring herself as the hero who finally outsmarts the universe (and her lunch). Or maybe she’ll just be happy to plant her feet back on Earth, where noodles stay in the bowl and chopsticks are for eating, not catching! Fingers crossed she’s back soon, trading in zero-gravity meals for solid ground and big hugs!

Harmonious Healing: The Zen of Sound Therapy

After years of collaborating on theater and music programs, my friend and former business partner, Deborah Kellar, recently retired. I expected her to be enjoying a leisurely retirement, but I was surprised to find her diving into a new passion: sound healing. Armed with a collection of unique instruments from her travels, YahChannah, as she’s now known, is using the power of sound to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and even aid in physical healing.

Talking to her made me reflect on how sound can be used to create a peaceful atmosphere during life’s transitions. As a Death Doula, I’m intrigued by YahChannah’s work and the potential for sound healing to enhance the end-of-life experience. To learn more about the science behind sound healing and discover how YahChannah is using it to promote well-being, keep reading.

Sisterhood Spotlight

“Big Med” / “Little Patient”: The Necessity of Patient Advocates

During one of our late-night ‘How can we solve the problems of the world?’ brainstorming sessions, we came up with a bold idea: reviving the Peace Corps with a twist. Imagine new doctors working in overburdened healthcare systems for a few years after med school in exchange for med school debt forgiveness. This could not only address physician shortages but also provide much-needed relief to underserved communities. Hey, Palm Springs, with its growing population and aging demographic, should be at the top of that list.

Navigating the medical system here can feel daunting, with long waits for appointments and a healthcare network that’s often short-staffed and overburdened. A routine check-up might take months to schedule, and missing that appointment can set you back another six months. But as Dr. Anne Staveren emphasizes, you don’t have to face these challenges alone. From a young girl whose post-surgery complaints were ignored to a tennis star whose chest pain was dismissed, countless stories reveal how critical it is to have a patient advocate. With an informed, compassionate voice by your side, you can make sure your concerns are heard and your care is prioritized—whether you’re at a routine check-up or in the emergency room.

Books to Devour

Okay, I hesitated to read this book and write this review because I love Amazon. It’s my mall of choice, with thousands of retailers at my fingertips—everything from clothing and shoes to appliances and even medicine! No lines, no traffic, no hassle returns. But after reading The Everything War, I might start checking my packages for hidden corporate schemes.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to watch a corporate behemoth devour its competitors like snacks at a board meeting, The Everything War delivers in full, with a side of cutthroat strategy. Dana Mattioli’s book is like watching a horror movie where the villain isn’t a chainsaw-wielding maniac but rather your friendly neighborhood retailer, Amazon. The tactics are brutal, the stories are jaw-dropping, and you’ll never look at that smiley cardboard box on your doorstep the same way again. Spoiler: it’s not smiling, it’s smirking.

Mattioli’s investigative skills deserve a standing ovation (and probably some protective gear). She exposes how Amazon’s quest for world domination includes ruthless tactics that would make Patty LaBelle stop in mid-yep. By the end of this book, you’ll be questioning every click, every Prime purchase, and possibly even reality itself. So, while I’ll probably still enjoy the convenience of my next Prime Day purchase, I might feel a little guilty knowing what it took to get that two-day shipping.

As a fan of The Girl with the Louding Voice, I was waiting with a certain amount of anticipation for the release of And So I Roar. Author Abi Daré seamlessly picks up where the first book left off, continuing Adunni’s inspiring journey. No worries—while reading the first novel deepens the experience, And So I Roar stands strong on its own, making it accessible to both returning and new readers alike.

The story follows Adunni as she returns to her childhood village, Ikati, to participate in a ritual that could determine the fate of her community. Daré’s vivid storytelling and richly developed characters make this novel compelling from start to finish. I love reading about different cultures—this book doesn’t disappoint.

Adunni is as resilient and determined as ever, and her “life lessons” throughout the book offer valuable insights and inspiration. The novel also introduces a group of young women who, like Adunni, are forced to partake in the ritual. Their presence adds depth and complexity to the narrative, with their friendships offering solidarity and hope in the face of hardship. As the saying goes, “it’s easier to face the storm when you have your sisters by your side.”

Taste of Soul

Labor Day Grilling: TexaCali Brisket for the Ultimate Backyard Bash

Barry was born in Kansas City, where BBQ is king, grew up in Los Angeles, where outdoor living reigns, and learned to throw in a little Texas smoke for good measure. He says, “BBQ has always been a part of my life—whether it’s KC ribs, LA’s laid-back grilling, or Texas-style brisket, I love it all. And I grew up on the Raiders—still a die-hard fan! In my family, it’s a given: if there’s BBQ, the Raiders are running plays on the TV, and I’m hovering over my smoker, making sure that irresistible smell wafts through the neighborhood.”

Labor Day is no exception. Like millions of other Americans, Barry will be in the backyard, BBQing, and smoking a brisket. It’s not rocket science, folks, but it does take patience (and a plan B for hangry family members like me). So, let me give you the lowdown on achieving brisket nirvana, TexaCali style. Barry has shared his coveted recipe with us – because I insisted on it!

Recipe Here

Sweet Baby’s Pairing

When it comes to pairing drinks with brisket, you’ve got options: wine or beer—no one will judge you for choosing both! For wine lovers, go bold with a smoky Zinfandel or a Malbec that’s got as much body as your brisket. It’s like they were made for each other—tough, rich, and a little spicy. But if you’re cracking open a cold one, make it a craft beer with a malty backbone—think stouts, porters, or a hoppy IPA that can hold its own. It’s the perfect partner for that smoky goodness, plus it keeps you cool when the smoker starts testing your patience!

Bonus Pairing: B.B. King is the perfect pairing with Texas brisket. His soulful blues set the ideal slow-smoked rhythm, kicking things off with classics like “The Thrill is Gone” to ease into the day. As the brisket cooks and the smoky flavors deepen, his smooth guitar riffs keep the vibe just right—rich, flavorful, and timeless, just like that perfectly smoked cut of beef.

The Sunset Music Foundation SMARTS Initiative!

The Sunset Music Foundation: Empowering the Next Generation of Musicians

At the Sunset Music Foundation, we believe in the transformative power of music. Through our SMARTS Initiative (Sharing Music, Accessing Resources, Transforming Students), we provide musical instruments to underprivileged youth in our community.

Now, when you think of Palm Springs, you might picture posh hotels, lush country clubs, and high-profile music festivals. But for many local kids, this glamorous vision is a mirage. In reality, nearly 97.5% of the students in the Coachella Valley School Districts including Palm Springs (PSUSD) are classified as socioeconomically disadvantaged. These kids, growing up in cities like Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Indio, and Desert Hot Springs, face challenges most tourists don’t see—limited resources, language barriers, and a lack of opportunities to escape the cycle of poverty.

Many students return their instruments at the end of class, cutting off access to practice at home. Our mission is to change that, ensuring that kids like Trenton, Zion, and DiMaya can keep their musical passion alive by owning their instruments. This is more than just a hobby—it’s a pathway out of poverty. Music has the power to open doors, whether through scholarships, college admissions, or simply by building confidence and a sense of purpose.

We’re excited about the impact this initiative has on the future of music and the futures of these young people. By providing instruments, we’re not just helping them develop their talents—we’re giving them the tools to succeed, express themselves, and potentially rise out of socioeconomic challenges. Every contribution—whether it’s spreading the word or donating—brings us closer to making a lasting difference in the lives of these budding musicians. Let’s work together to make a change!

Visit our SMARTS Initiative page to learn more about how you can support or apply for our Instrument Ownership Program. Together, we can nurture the next generation of musical talent and help provide pathways to brighter futures!
