Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 10/7/24 – On October 5, 2024, Equality California marked the 25th anniversary of its Los Angeles Equality Awards at the Fairmont Century Plaza, celebrating influential figures in the LGBTQ+ community. The star-studded event brought together political leaders, activists, and entertainers for an unforgettable evening of recognition and advocacy.
Honoring Julian Breece and Greg Sarris
The prestigious Equality Visibility Award was presented to Julian Breece, the acclaimed writer and director known for his work on Rustin. Breece was recognized for his dedication to amplifying underrepresented voices, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community, through narratives that challenge stereotypes and foster understanding. In his acceptance speech, he poignantly reminded attendees of the media’s power in shaping societal perceptions and advancing civil rights.
Greg Sarris, Chairman of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, received the Community Leadership Award for his tireless advocacy on behalf of both Indigenous and LGBTQ+ communities. His efforts to bridge these movements highlight the critical intersections of civil rights and justice.

The evening featured stirring remarks from U.S. Senator Alex Padilla, California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, and California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.
