This award-winning musical about Princess Diana

By: Judy Shields

Sierra Madre’s fourth and final Solo Shows Festival 2023 presentation of Di Lady Di, a musical about Princess Diana written and performed by Charlotte Munson, takes an unflinching gaze into the heart and mind of an icon in turmoil. Di Lady Di has won and been nominated for multiple awards, including the 2022 award for Best Musical from the Hollywood Fringe Festival and was designated Best of the Fringe by The Tvolution.

Di Lady Di was amazing and brilliantly portrayed by Charlotte Munson. A story told of a young girl, with a heart that believed in love, who had an upbringing that was not meant for a young girl like her.  So many facts that I learned about Princess Diana that I was not aware of was acted out on the stage this past weekend.  There were sad moments and moments of laughter.  Her quick dress changes and how she took a sheet to make a dress out of it was true entertainment. Charlotte captured her character as though Princess Di was telling her own story, through storytelling, some dancing and song, the way a musical should be!  I actually thought of Austin Butler portraying Elvis while I watched her.  This one woman play was the best for any fans of Princess Di, and if you are not, you surely went home to look her up! I really got a laugh when Charlotte portrayed Prince Charles (his title back then), holding up a dress jacket as she changed her voice and made comical faces.  Bravo! Charlotte had several props on the stage, the way she used them and interacted with them brought the story she was telling to life!

If you get a chance to see this play anywhere else, make sure you go see her you won’t be disappointed,
