In the mid-season premiere of EXPEDITION WITH STEVE BACKSHALL on Wednesday, May 6 at 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET, adventurer, explorer and naturalist Steve Backshall  prepares to drop down into the darkness of a giant pit that’s 400 feet deep. This is the first stage of a Mayan obstacle course built thousands of years ago. Backshall, along with his expedition crew, must wriggle through tight passages constructed by the Maya and climb down steep pits. After five hours of grueling physical “tests,” they feel worthy of their prize when they reach the end and see a giant mural of a jaguar and a unique sculpture jutting out of a rock.

The team camps for the night in an ancient abandoned monastery. On the road north, they hear of a largely unexplored new cave system only just recently discovered. Backshall and his team of experts plan to push into new passages to see what they can find. Hundreds of vampire bats adorn the walls.

PBS’s new 10-episode series EXPEDITION WITH STEVE BACKSHALL reveals there are still parts of our planet yet to be discovered. Backshall pursues incredible journeys and world firsts — unclimbed peaks, unexplored cave systems and uncharted landscapes — setting foot where no human has been before. The first six episodes of EXPEDITION WITH STEVE BACKSHALL aired earlier this year, and the final four episodes of the season premiere Wednesdays in May at 10 p.m. ET on PBS, starting May 6. The season finale airs Wednesday, May 27.

In this global series, Backshall ventures into undiscovered territory, endures extreme physical challenges, encounters extraordinary wildlife and teams up with remarkable people along the way. From free-diving in underground river systems and descending deep into the caves of the Maya underworld, to kayaking Himalayan whitewater and scaling unclimbed Arctic peaks, these expeditions push Backshall and his expert crew to the limit.
