OFF THE SCREEN SERIES AT SIERRA MADRE PLAYHOUSE PRESENTS SCREEN CLASSICS….AND A HALLOWEEN TREAT
To complement its live stage presentation of Little Women, the Off the Screen Series at Sierra Madre Playhouse will present midweek screenings of two film classics which are, like the play, set during the Civil War:

From RKO Radio Pictures. (Black-and-white, 1933, USA, 115 minutes, not rated) Starring Katharine Hepburn, Joan Bennett, Spring Byington, Edna May Oliver, Paul Lukas, Douglass Montgomery. Little Women is a “coming of age” drama tracing the lives of four sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. During the American Civil War, the girls father is away serving as a minister to the troops. The family, headed by their beloved Marmee, must struggle to make ends meet, with the help of their kind and wealthy neighbor, Mr. Laurence, and his high-spirited grandson Laurie.

From Columbia TriStar.(Color, 1989, USA, 122 minutes, rated R) Starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, Morgan Freeman Jr., Jihni Kennedy, Andre Bruagher. Shaw was an officer in the Federal Army during the American Civil War who volunteered to lead the first company of black soldiers. Shaw was forced to deal with the prejudices of both the enemy (who had orders to kill commanding officers of blacks), and of his own fellow officers.

On Thursday, October 31, we’ll have a special treat for the kids: Disney’s Toy Story of Terror. The 22-minute animated adventure will play at 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00. The toys go on a road trip, when an unexpected event leads them to a roadside motel. After one of the toys goes missing, the others find themselves caught up in a mysterious, monstrous, and terrifying sequence of events that must be solved before they all suffer the same fate. Featuring the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Stephen Tobolowsky, Timothy Dalton, Carl Weathers. Admission: Two dollars.
