Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 10/13/24 – On October 10, I had the pleasure of attending “On Dissonance,” a captivating performance series curated by Solange Knowles for Saint Heron at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. This unique event explored the innovations of Black orchestral and operatic music, featuring compositions by Julia Perry, Patrice Rushen, and Knowles herself.
The concert was a remarkable fusion of historical legacy and contemporary artistry, shining a spotlight on the contributions of Black women composers in classical and operatic music. It offered profound insights into their voices and impact, creating a powerful and emotional experience.
From the moment the orchestra began, I was entranced, particularly by the works of Julia Perry. Her music feels both timeless and contemporary, often haunting—truly a theatrical experience. Conductor Jeri Lynne Johnson infused a precise and modern flair into the performance, bringing Perry’s enchanting pieces to life.
The standout performer of the evening was undoubtedly Mezzo-Soprano Zoie Reams. Her voice resonated throughout the concert hall, touching the souls of everyone present. It was angelic and powerful, leaving me wishing for an entire show dedicated to showcasing her immense talent.
In a special highlight, Solange Knowles premiered a new song she wrote, performed by Javan Carter and Desmond Provost on the Sousaphone—a refreshing and underrepresented instrument in orchestral music. The event curated by Knowles was nothing short of divine, avant-garde, and a profound celebration of artistic legacy and innovation. It took the audience on a moving journey through the evolving expressions of Black performance art across generations.
Once again, Solange proves she is far more than just her sister; she is a cultural force in her own right.
