Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 7/23/24 – Fitness is a journey that often begins with personal determination and perseverance. For some, like the remarkable individual we will explore in this article, it becomes a lifelong passion leading to extraordinary achievements. In this article, we delve into the inspiring story of an immigrant who became an 11-time champion and record holder in the bench press, solidifying his place as a true bench press icon.
Born in Paris to Armenian parents, Narbe Mansourian then moved back to his parent’s home country of Iran at the age of 5. During that time, the Iran-Iraq war would begin. At 7, his family faced tragedy when his father was incarcerated in a political prison, which would later lead to his execution. The traumatic experience pressed his mother to make the decision to flee back to France. Narbe Mansourian’s childhood was marked by hardship and trauma. At the age of 12, his family made the life-altering decision to move to Los Angeles, CA to be closer to family and better opportunities.
Upon arriving in the US, Mansourian integrated himself into American culture by listening to Dodgers and Lakers broadcasts, emulating the rich vocabulary and delivery of the legendary Vin Scully and Chick Hearn. In high school, he joined the yearbook staff and the drama department to improve his English. Mansourian took an interest in various sports, especially soccer and rugby. While trying to make the rugby team in college, one of the coaches told him to work on his upper body strength and suggested the bench press as an excellent exercise. Soon after, he was pleasantly surprised that his ascent on the bench was more exponential than linear. He continued working hard to improve on his newfound talent. He entered his first competition at Venice Beach in 2000, where he placed second. Mansourian would go on to win countless regional, state, national, and international competitions. His biggest accomplishment was winning the World Championship 11 times and setting numerous World Records in his weight class. His personal best in the bench press was a world record 392lbs while weighing in at 147 pounds.
Throughout his journey, Mansourian learned valuable lessons that extended far beyond the realm of fitness. He discovered the power of discipline, resilience, and self-belief. These qualities propelled him to success while inspiring others, showing them that anything is possible with determination and hard work.
As the bench press champion’s reputation grew, he realized the platform he had been given. Rather than basking in his success, he used his influence to give back to the community that had supported him throughout his journey. He organized workshops, mentored aspiring athletes, and advocated for the importance of fitness in all aspects of life. He has also used his platform to raise awareness for many causes: muscular dystrophy in children, homelessness, and the atrocities caused by the Azerbaijani government towards ethnic Armenians.
Today, the bench press champion’s legacy lives on. His story continues to inspire individuals from all walks of life, reminding them of the transformative power of fitness. Through his dedication and unwavering determination, he achieved greatness and exemplifies the true spirit of a bench press champion.
“Fitness is not just about physical strength; it is a demonstration of the human spirit’s ability to overcome challenges and achieve greatness.” – Narbe Mansourian.
