Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 4/12/25 – I’ve known Mark Mothersbaugh since 1979, when we first collaborated on a film project for a German director. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of following his ever-evolving artistic journey—one that’s consistently full of surprises, boundless creativity, and an unmistakable spark of originality.

Now, Mothersbaugh opens a new chapter with MutMuz, his newly launched gallery in Los Angeles’ Chinatown. The debut exhibition, Why Are We Here No. 01, is a solo presentation of his oil paintings and screenprints, marking the first installment in an ongoing series under the same existential title.
Long celebrated as a visionary artist and cultural pioneer, Mothersbaugh continues to defy categorization. With a reputation for experimentation and a self-described role as a “social scientist,” he blends the familiar with the surreal to create dreamlike works that explore the absurdity and beauty of human existence.
Each piece in Why Are We Here No. 01 is a vivid meditation on life’s biggest questions—equal parts personal reflection and cultural critique. The result is a body of work that is at once whimsical, bizarre, and deeply thought-provoking.
With MutMuz, Mothersbaugh invites us into his imaginative universe, encouraging viewers to embark on a journey of introspection, wonder, and curiosity.
MutMuz Gallery opened April 11, 2025, in Chinatown, Los Angeles.
