Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 7/25/23 – Run of the mill teenage angst coupled with a devastating childhood trauma, the short Nothing, Except Everything tackles dissecting the questioning minds of a charismatic young adult as he faces the precipice of the real world before graduating from high school. One of the major themes of the profound short can be summed up with a simple question: Life and its nuance, does it even really matter?

The audience finds the main character, Miles, in the throes of adolescence at several parties and gatherings with his peers in celebration of their first true milestone, high school graduation. Aside from the festivities, Miles is also pondering the number 7 and why it’s chosen the most when asked, ‘choose a number between 1 and 10.’ Of course, such a milestone catapults teens into a smorgasbord of questioning their reality, their futures, and everything in between. For Miles unfortunately, many of his existential questions found roots in his childhood after the tragic death of his favorite maternal uncle. Immensely talented writer and director Wesley Wang explains, “The death of his uncle is what had Miles starting to think about all of these issues; it gives a backstory to where the number 7 came from. His uncle would always ask him to pick a number between 1 and 10. This is what triggered Miles’ Nhilistic thoughts he has; he see’s someone so close to him commit suicide and its jarring.”

Even in the midst of such chaos, celebration, and change, Miles still seems to find his own light in the darkness in his girlfriend Harper. Wang provides context, “Harper was definitely his number 7, which means that she was his order in all of the chaos. He found something in Harper that gave him some order and happiness.”
