The second night of SXSW 2025 set the bar incredibly high, and it’s hard to imagine it getting any better than this! John Fogerty graced the stage at Stubb’s Amphitheater under the stars, with perfect Texas weather adding to the already electric atmosphere. By the time I arrived, the venue was packed, fans spilling out onto the grounds, all eager to see the legend perform. I squeezed into a group of enthusiastic Texas natives who’d come all the way from San Antonio just for this show.
Fogerty began the night with a heartfelt video, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to perform the music he now fully owns, alongside his sons Shane and Tyler, and with his wife, Julie, on the road. It was a touching moment, as Fogerty reflected on the long journey to reclaim ownership of the CCR catalog, a battle that took 55 years to win.
At 79, Fogerty took the stage with youthful energy, declaring, “I just got my songs back, and I’m gonna play every one of them.” The crowd erupted in cheers, knowing this would be a night to remember.

Shane and Tyler Fogerty, who are now integral members of the band, joined their father on stage for a rendition of “Who’ll Stop the Rain” and “Green River,” with Shane delivering an impressive guitar jam. The familial bond between the Fogertys was undeniable, as the stage was filled with a sense of mutual respect and joy, further amplifying the music’s emotional depth.

The night took a poignant turn when the band performed “Fortunate Son,” accompanied by a slideshow showcasing the Vietnam War era and the draft. Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello joined the band onstage for a fiery rendition of “Travelin’ Band,” bringing even more power to an already charged set.
The show reached another peak with Rob Stone on saxophone, adding another layer of energy to “Rock and Roll Girls.” Between songs, Fogerty shared personal stories, including one about his beloved Rickenbacker guitar’s return to his hands, a surprise gift hidden under the Christmas tree by his wife, Julie.
It was a night filled with warmth and sincerity, as Fogerty poured his heart into every song. Backed by a tight and well-rehearsed band, his performance was nothing short of magical. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have witnessed such a legendary show. Thank you, SXSW!
