A collaboration by photographer Greg Gorman and artist Gary Johns
Hohmann Fine Art
Story and photographs by Jimmy Steinfeldt
Palm Desert, CA (The Hollywood Times) 1/29/23 – I attended an amazing art exhibit Friday night at the magnificent Hohmann gallery in Palm Desert. Renown photographer Greg Gorman collaborated with his friend conceptual artist Gary Johns to create new and original art they describe as Homage to African Tribal Artists. I have previously done a full interview with Greg Gorman for The Hollywood Times. (https://hollywoodtimes.net/greg-gorman/)
The exhibit is in three parts: 1. Greg Gorman portraits of celebrities. 2. Greg Gorman portraits of his African tribal art collection. 3. The collaborative art of Greg Gorman and Gary Johns.
Jimmy Steinfeldt: Greg, please tell me about the exhibit.
Greg Gorman: The area with my celebrity portraiture are pictures from my previous book called It’s Not About Me. That project included previously unpublished photographs. The main exhibit here called Homage is the collaboration I did with my friend Gary Johns. He has been the creative director on most of my previous books. Here he takes center stage taking the art I’ve created with the portraits of my tribal art collection and buried the images inside some of his drawings and illustrations.
Jimmy Steinfeldt: Gary, please tell me about this amazing collaboration.
Gary Johns: Greg and I have known each other since the early 70s. Throughout the years I have been designing and editing several of his books. Whatever it took to make him look good. During COVID Greg said let’s do something together. He photographed his African sculptures and then turned the images over to me and said, “have your way with them.” We are great friends, and we work well together.
The exhibit will be up through March 4. For further info on the artists and gallery:
