I don’t usually feel my age (which is well known since I do radio commercials for a Medicare insurance company). That is until recently. A springtime cold coupled with a strained back has friends and family saying “you should slow down!”
That’s not really in my DNA, and I came across a National Geographic article on the subject that I wanted to share. “New data suggests old age is more of a social construct than an objective biological reality,” reads the headline. It goes on to say that middle-aged and older adults nowadays feel younger than similar aged people did 10 to 20 years ago.
A few weeks ago, I wished happy birthday with a call to a 103 year-old former co-worker. She was the front office person at my first radio job in my hometown when I was a teenager. She aptly remembered many of the people and events from that time. And it was interesting to think that I might live another 40 years.
But will I want to?? Time will tell.
‘You’re as old as you feel’, goes the old adage. The Old Gays have a great TikTok video on the subject. My favorite line: “We’re old gays. We were at the first brunch… known as The Last Supper.”

1. Cinco de Mayo Palm Springs
Join the fiesta and celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Sunday, May 5 from 4–10 pm in the Arenas District. Entertainment for this free event includes Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles, a Selena Tribute Artist, KGAY’s own DJ Galaxy (Vincent Corrales) and more. 2. Barbie at Sunnylands
The popular outdoor movie series Films in the Gardens returns to Sunnylands Center & Gardens in May, highlighting films with unique and imaginative set designs. This Friday, May 3, at 7:30 pm, the film will be Barbie (2023), starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Admission is free, carpooling is strongly encouraged. Filmgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and small picnics.

3. HUMP! Film Festival
Dan Savage’s HUMP! Film Festival is back for 2024, on Saturday, May 4 at 6:30 and 9 pm at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. HUMP! is renowned for its daring, thought-provoking showcases of short erotic films, created by real people for real people. The KGAY Retro Lunch airs Monday through Friday from Noon–1 pm, with DJ Galaxy (Vincent Corrales) and DJ Eric Ornelas playing an hour of their high-energy throwback mixes. On Sundays, we put all five hours together for the Retro Sunday Brunch from 11 am–4 pm. Perfect party music! The KGAY Sunday Tea Dance with DJ Modgirl airs every Sunday from 4–6 pm (right after the Retro Brunch). DJ Modgirl (AKA Kellee McQuinn) is all about “Music! Dancing! Fashion!
