Having successfully climbed the corporate ladder for nearly 20 years, share your best advice for younger women.
Heather Monahan: Listen to yourself over everyone else. You will have the answer when you trust yourself. Start taking bigger risks, they will pay off!
You received the Glass Ceiling Award and you were named one of the Most Influential Women in Radio in 2017. What did this mean to you?
Heather Monahan: At the time, I was extremely proud of winning the Glass Ceiling award as it had been a goal of mine to show others who grew up poor that they could reach the c-suite. Seeing my hard work recognized as one of the most influential women in my field was very exciting too.
What does “Confidence” mean to you?
Heather Monahan: Confidence means walking into a room not caring what others think of me but instead caring about the people I meet. I used to walk into rooms wanting people to approve of me and like me and these days I walk in hoping I like them or find opportunity otherwise I won’t be staying.
How have you struggled with confidence?
Heather Monahan: When I got fired 2 years ago, I thought I had lost everything. My confidence was at a low point. I had associated my self worth with my job title and my paycheck. Getting fired has been an amazing gift which has afforded me the opportunity to create real sustainable confidence in my life.

Heather Monahan: Writing my first book was the scariest thing I have ever done professionally. As a sales leader, I had been told that I was good in that lane and should stay in it. Taking a chance to smash through the lanes and take my talents to write was petrifying. I googled how to write a book as I had no idea. What I found is you have to be disciplined to write each day. I did that not knowing what I was writing about and within a week it became clear to me I was writing about my own experiences where I struggled with my confidence and how I learned to create confidence instead. I was writing a blueprint to create confidence in any situation.
Tell us about your hugely successful, “Creating Confidence” Podcast.
Heather Monahan: I had no idea a year ago that I would be launching a podcast! I had been a guest on many shows when I started noticing the episodes that I was on would chart really well on Applepodcast. That led me to launch my own show. I kicked it off with the biggest guest I could find, Gary Vaynerchuck. I am so proud of that episode and how different this interview is as we got into his personal life, an area he typically doesn’t go. My guest are amazing and the feedback that I get from my listeners is it is like listening in on a conversation and learning so much you need to take notes the whole time. I am so proud of my show!
Who would you like on your show? Who has been the most inspiring guest? (s)
Heather Monahan: I would love to have Oprah and Ellen on my show! My most inspiring guests have been Ed Mylett, Jesse Itzler and Flip Flippen.
What do you enjoy most about being a TedX Speaker?
Heather Monahan: That it is over! That was such a strange and stressful situation unlike any other talk I have ever given. The pressure to nail a talk in 10 minutes, share your idea worth spreading, not leave the circle and hit your mark before the clock expires is intense. They say the talk owns you or you own the talk and I am proud to say I owned it!
Share your vision for 2020.
Heather Monahan: My vision for this year is to continue to inspire others and bring good into the world. We are living in a time where media can be so negative and I am so lucky to bring stories to life that encourage others to reach their potential, fire their villains and pursue their dreams.
