Tis’ the Season

This season has arrived! The birds are making their journey back south. For those of us in the desert, that means cooler temps and a whole new energy as the seasonal restaurants and clubs come back to life. Music will be wafting from every corner, and the snowbirds? They’re gleefully swapping out jackets and boots for shorts, T’s, and sneakers—or should we just call them pickleball shoes now? With the buzz in the air, it’s time to embrace everything Palm Springs has to offer this November!

My 5 Top Reasons to Visit Palm Springs This November

Let’s talk Palm Springs, beautiful people. Where the sun shines a little brighter, and the mocktails taste sweeter. For those not lucky enough to live here, here are my top five reasons why you need to get to Palm Springs this November!

1. Sunshine Therapy

Listen, some places have fall leaves. We have golden rays of sunshine—365 days a year. So, while your friends are pulling out parkas and pumpkin spice lattes, you can be lounging poolside in Palm Springs with a refreshing mocktail (or cocktail for my sweet baby sippers), basking in the glory of eternal sunshine. November is that perfect not-too-hot, not-too-cold, just-right weather.

2. Mid-Century Modern Wonderland

Palm Springs is like stepping back in time—think Rat Pack swagger in the ’50s. You don’t need a history book, just walk around and soak in the sleek lines, bold colors, and plenty of “Hold up, folks really lived like this?” vibes.

3. Outdoor Adventure, Baby!

Who says the desert is just sand and cacti? November is prime time for outdoor fun. Whether you’re at one of our great golf courses, hiking the Seven Sisters or “hiking” through the Cabazon Outlets (hey, that’s a workout too!), it’s a win-win!. For the adventurous, ride the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway for jaw-dropping views.

4. Sunset Music & Comedy Festival

From November 8th-10th, the Sunset Music & Comedy Festival is bringing the heat with vibes you didn’t know you needed! Top-tier performers, hilarious comedians, and music that’ll keep you moving all night long. But this isn’t just a festival—it’s a full-on experience. You’ll be laughing, dancing, and living your best life. The Palm Springs Club Crawl — Come for the fun, stay for the memories that’ll have you talking about this weekend for years to come! www.sweetbabyjai.com

5. LGBTQ+ Friendly Vibes

Palm Springs isn’t just famous for its hot springs and great spas—it’s one of the most LGBTQ-friendly cities in the world. With nearly half the population identifying as LGBTQ+, this city is a top destination for LGBTQ+ tourism. From Pride events to LGBTQ-owned businesses, Palm Springs embraces diversity and inclusivity. Whether you’re here for the parties or the peaceful, welcoming atmosphere, this city rolls out the rainbow-colored carpet like no other.

Partner Shout Out!

We’re thrilled to welcome Living Out as a proud sponsor of the Sweet Baby J’ai Presents Sunset Music & Comedy Festival!

Just last week, I found myself at a cocktail party at Living Out in Palm Springs, enjoying a glass of pinot and chatting with residents about why they chose to live in an LGBTQ-focused community in one of America’s most LGBTQ-friendly cities. The answer was both simple and profound: “Because here, I feel comfortable.” Curious, I dug a little deeper: “Can’t you feel comfortable anywhere in this town? For instance, can’t you kiss your partner in a restaurant?” One resident chuckled, “Maybe we could—but we don’t.” Interestingly, one of the residents I spoke with was straight, and her reasons were the same: she valued the ease, openness, and sense of belonging in a community built on inclusivity.

It made perfect sense—while some have moved from just across town, many come from places around the country where acceptance isn’t a given. Living Out is more than just a place to live; it’s about finding a space where comfort, community, and authenticity go hand-in-hand. One resident perfectly put it, “In a place like this, you don’t just live; you belong.” It’s a welcoming environment designed with LGBTQ life in mind, offering not only a residence but a true sense of home.

Okay, I get it. But honestly, they had me at the included breakfast and housekeeping!

How Social Media Trends are Reeling in Older Americans

For this section, every month, I track the trends of the most talked-about topics, and—surprise, surprise—AI is always at the top of the list. But here’s the twist: also climbing the ranks is how older folks are embracing social media. That’s right, Grandma’s not just knitting anymore; she’s out here TikToking like she invented the “For You” page!

Full disclaimer: The real most talked-about topic is the election, but for the sake of my mental health, I’m steering clear of that minefield. Instead, I’m sticking to my tried-and-true stress relief—cute, chubby, dancing babies. You’re welcome.

It’s cool to see how health and wellness trends are making waves with the golden generation. One minute, Uncle Earl is doing his morning stretches; the next, he’s deep into TikTok University, learning about CBG gummies and permanent jewelry. Now, don’t get me wrong—these trends aren’t all bad. Social media’s got older folks exploring wellness tips, DIY hacks, and even life-changing dance challenges. But somebody better tell Uncle Earl that not all of TikTok’s wisdom should be trusted, especially when it comes with side effects like “permanent” jewelry.

And let’s not forget shopping. Ads and influencers are pulling seniors in faster than a Black Friday sale. From bamboo pajamas to pickleball shoes (yep, that’s a thing!), they’re catching on like wildfire. I know, I know—your Aunt Susan bought three pairs of “pickleball shoes” last month—and she doesn’t even play!

Here’s the thing—embracing social media isn’t just about hopping on trends. It’s about staying connected and finding community. That sense of belonging, whether through joining a Facebook group or showing off their new moves on TikTok, is something everyone craves. And if posting selfies makes Nana feel fabulous, who’s gonna stop her?

But, heads up—there’s a catch. It’s easy to get sucked into the world of viral trends, and not all of them are helpful or accurate. Misinformation can spread like wildfire. So, how do you know what’s legit? Do your homework, honey! Check reliable sources before jumping on every health hack or miracle cure that pops up in your feed. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Stick to credible sites and trusted voices—leave the TikTok doctors and Facebook remedies for the folks who don’t know any better! And try not to get sucked in like me—those AI-generated cute, chubby dancing -baby videos get me every time!

Artist of the Month

CELIA CRUZ

Celia Cruz isn’t just the baddest Salsa Queen to ever grace the stage—she’s a force of nature who made sure her voice and her culture shook the world. Her energy, her rhythms, and that legendary shout of “¡Azúcar!” are stamped in our souls.

This Afro-Cuban powerhouse brought salsa out of the barrios and into every corner of the globe with hits like “La Vida Es Un Carnaval” and “Quimbara.” Her music didn’t just make you dance; it celebrated Black identity, Afro-Latinidad, and the resilience of a people who turned pain into joy. She made it loud, proud, and damn irresistible.

This November, we honor her as our Artist of the Month because Celia didn’t just sing—she broke barriers. And now, as the very first Afro-Cuban artist to have her beautiful face on a U.S. quarter, her legacy is set in history. Celia didn’t just carve a path in music; she paved a highway for every Afro-Latina who came after her, standing tall in her blackness with that bad-ass energy. She left us with more than just music—she left us with a legacy of unapologetic pride. We chose Celia because her voice is still teaching us to dance through life’s hardships and celebrate our power. I can’t wait to get my roll of Celia quarters!

Rising Star of the Month

Angela Aguilar

I was cruising with my granddaughter, listening to her playlist, when this soft, sweet voice floated out of the speakers—singing in Spanish. I asked her, “Who is this? And do you even know what she’s saying?” She popped her head and said, “Angela Aguilar, and she’s singing a love song.” Which, of course, translated to, No, I don’t know what she’s saying, but it sounds good! Before I knew it, my granddaughter was pitching me on why I should know Angela and why we should bring her to our festival. After listening to her, I had to agree. Angela Aguilar has that “it” factor.

Born into the legendary Aguilar family—her father is Pepe Aguilar, and her grandparents are Mexican music icons Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre—Angela’s got musical royalty running through her veins. But she’s not just riding on legacy; she’s carving her own space in the industry. At just 15, she dropped Primero Soy Mexicana in 2018, earning herself a Grammy nomination. Her powerful voice breathes new life into rancheras and mariachi, blending the traditional with a fresh, modern twist. Her hits like La Llorona and Bésame Mucho have captivated fans young and old, making her a rising star who’s here to stay.

Listening to her reminds me of Selena before she crossed over into English pop music. Like Selena, Angela is already a major star in the Latin community, and I believe she’s on the same trajectory. Watch out for this young woman—she’s coming for your heart, and with her talent and grace, she’s about to take over. That’s why we’ve chosen Angela Aguilar as our Rising Star for November. She’s the future of Mexican music, blending tradition with contemporary style while honoring the rich legacy of those whose shoulders she stands on.

Rhythm & Rhyme

Sylvia Plath’s “Lady Lazarus” speaks to a woman’s indomitable spirit, rising again despite the world’s repeated attempts to tear her down. This idea of resurrection and resilience is incredibly relevant today, particularly in the current political climate.

Last night, I heard a metaphor that perfectly sums up the absurdity we’re witnessing: imagine being offered a choice between a plate of broken glass and a roasted chicken dinner with potatoes and asparagus. The irrationality of the situation? People aren’t debating the broken glass—they’re hung up on whether the potatoes come with rosemary.

This metaphor reflects the stark contrast between the choices on the table. On one hand, we have an unfit leader who threatens our fundamental rights—like bodily autonomy, a basic right that women have fought to protect for generations. On the other hand, we have a highly educated, accomplished woman who embodies competence and sanity. Yet, rather than make the obvious choice, people are nitpicking over trivial details, like the rosemary, while ignoring the harm of choosing the destructive option.

The anxiety here isn’t just about the results of the election—it’s about the fact that such a stark choice is even up for debate. How did we reach a point where people, including women and marginalized groups, are willing to choose their own demise over voting for a woman? The contrast between the broken glass and the chicken dinner couldn’t be clearer, but the deep-seated fear of a smart woman in power remains too much for some to accept. It’s disappointing and frustrating, revealing how far misogyny has permeated our society.

“Lady Lazarus” echoes this fight. Like the speaker in Plath’s poem, women today are continually knocked down by societal oppression, but they rise again, more resilient than before. The poem’s defiant tone is a reminder that we, too, have the power to reject the destructive choices laid before us, to rise from the ashes, and to choose a path that leads to survival, progress, and justice. The lesson? Don’t let the trivial “rosemary” of the situation distract from the real danger.

Plath’s work is a powerful anthem for resilience, and much like her, we must continue to rise and fight against systems that seek to diminish us.

The key message for me is that the poem’s defiance serves as a powerful reminder that women have the strength to reject the destructive paths laid out for them. They must resist “eating the broken glass” and instead choose the path that ensures their survival, rights, and progress.

Lady Lazarus

Sylvia Plath

1932 –1963

I have done it again.

One year in every ten

I manage it—

A sort of walking miracle, my skin

Bright as a Nazi lampshade,

My right foot

A paperweight,

My face a featureless, fine

Jew linen.

Peel off the napkin

O my enemy.

Do I terrify?—

The nose, the eye pits, the full set of teeth?

The sour breath

Will vanish in a day.

Soon, soon the flesh

The grave cave ate will be

At home on me

And I a smiling woman.

I am only thirty.

And like the cat I have nine times to die.

This is Number Three.

What a trash

To annihilate each decade.

What a million filaments.

The peanut-crunching crowd

Shoves in to see

Them unwrap me hand and foot—

The big strip tease.

Gentlemen, ladies

These are my hands

My knees.

I may be skin and bone,

Nevertheless, I am the same, identical woman.

The first time it happened I was ten.

It was an accident.

The second time I meant

To last it out and not come back at all.

I rocked shut

As a seashell.

They had to call and call

And pick the worms off me like sticky pearls.

Dying

Is an art, like everything else.

I do it exceptionally well.

I do it so it feels like hell.

I do it so it feels real.

I guess you could say I’ve a call.

It’s easy enough to do it in a cell.

It’s easy enough to do it and stay put.

It’s the theatrical

Comeback in broad day

To the same place, the same face, the same brute

Amused shout:

‘A miracle!’

That knocks me out.

There is a charge

For the eyeing of my scars, there is a charge

For the hearing of my heart—

It really goes.

And there is a charge, a very large charge

For a word or a touch

Or a bit of blood

Or a piece of my hair or my clothes.

So, so, Herr Doktor.

So, Herr Enemy.

I am your opus,

I am your valuable,

The pure gold baby

That melts to a shriek.

I turn and burn.

Do not think I underestimate your great concern.

Ash, ash—

You poke and stir.

Flesh, bone, there is nothing there–

A cake of soap,

A wedding ring,

A gold filling.

Herr God, Herr Lucifer

Beware

Beware.

Out of the ash

I rise with my red hair

And I eat men like air.

The Art of Doing Nothing: My Retirement Master Class

By Bobbie Lundy

People ask me all the time what I do, and my answer is always the same—nothing. Now, my version of “nothing” might be a little different from yours, but I’ve mastered the art of leisurely tasks. Makes sense to me-I moved to Palm Springs to retire. I water my plants with the precision of a Zen master, putz around the house touching up baseboards, ride my bike, take walks, and detail my car. I even look at my golf clubs and think, “One day soon.” Same goes for that art class I’ve been meaning to take—one day. And let’s not forget the all-important task of staring out the window, wondering why the neighbor’s blind has been crooked for three days. Nothing, my friends, is an underrated activity.

But don’t get me wrong—I’ve worked hard enough in my lifetime to have earned this rest. As my baby likes to say, retirement isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some people thrive on structure, routine, and the satisfaction of a good day’s work, even after they’ve “retired.” If going back to work or starting a new project makes you happy, more power to you—go for it! There’s nothing wrong with keeping the hustle alive as long as it’s what you want. It’s perfectly okay to dive back into work if it brings you joy—whether it’s a part-time thing, volunteering, or starting that side business you’ve always dreamed of.

But in my book, it’s also 100% okay to kick back and do (you guessed it) nothing. Retirement is your time, and how you spend it is entirely up to you. Whether you’re diving back into the workforce or perfecting your couch nap game, the key is doing what makes you happy.

My friends sometimes joke that I should teach a master class in the art of retirement. Consider this commentary your first lesson. Try it on and see if it fits.

As for me, since I retired, I’ve made a career out of doing nothing—and trust me, it’s not as easy as it looks. Plus, my wife works enough for both of us!

Barbara Lundy is a proud retired Air Force veteran who served her country with distinction. After completing her military service, she transitioned to a demanding and high-security civil service role, where she also enjoyed a long and successful career before retiring. Lundy is now an “active” member of the Coachella Valley Sistahs Network and happily married to me.

Books to Devour

I love a good thriller, especially one that lets me escape reality for a while. If I’m going to be scared, tho, I don’t want the danger to feel too close to home, so picking up Freida McFadden’s The Boyfriend seemed like a safe bet—no dating apps for me—period—dot. Let’s be real, dating these days is a whole new ballgame, especially for young women. It’s like online shopping: swipe left, swipe right—next! Gone are the days of meeting someone naturally, through friends, or by chance. Now, it’s all about building the perfect profile—part resume, part Instagram highlight reel—and hoping it’s enough to catch someone’s attention in seconds. The pressure to “perform” is intense, and you can’t help but wonder, how deep do these connections really go when they’re based on a picture and a few witty lines?

That’s exactly where The Boyfriend hits home. McFadden taps into the modern fear of dating in today’s world of strangers. Who really are we meeting online? Sydney Shaw, the main character, is just like so many young women out there—looking for love, tired of the same old dating disappointments, hoping this time will be different. But as her seemingly perfect boyfriend starts to show his true colors, Sydney realizes she might be in way over her head. The man she thought she knew is far more dangerous than she could have ever imagined.

It’s hard not to think of Ted Bundy—the infamous serial killer who seemed like the charming boy next door. My friend, who has an intense interest in serial killers (no judgment!), can tell you all about how Bundy’s good looks and charm helped him blend in, hiding his monstrous nature. McFadden taps into a similar fear in The Boyfriend—the unsettling idea that behind the façade of the perfect match could lurk something far more sinister. The novel twists the reality of modern dating into a gripping psychological thriller, reminding us that behind those Tinder, eHarmony, and Match.com profiles, things aren’t always what they seem.

I love to cook, though life doesn’t always leave me with enough time to be the culinary goddess I dream of being. But in my head, I’m totally Ina Garten—glass of wine in hand, casually laughing with friends as I whip up something fabulous without breaking a sweat, like a movie. There’s something so intimate about a dinner party: the clink of glasses, the shared stories, and the warmth of a home-cooked meal that just makes my heart sing. But isn’t it a trip how you can nail a recipe a dozen times, but the second company is coming over, the asparagus goes limp, and the chicken practically screams from the oven, “Help me, I’m burning!” This is why I love Ina—she tests her recipes dozens of times before they make it into her books. And whenever I use one, it always tastes as good as she promises.

So when her new cookbook, Be Ready When the Luck Happens, came out, I had to put my name on the waiting list. Her books are always filled with classic Ina-style recipes—approachable, elegant, and utterly delicious. From a roast chicken that actually comes out perfect every time, to desserts that will make you the star of any dinner party, Ina’s recipes are foolproof. What I love most about her books is that it’s not just about the food—it’s about creating an experience for your guests, complete with Ina’s tips for making everyone feel welcome. It’s like having her right there with you, ensuring everything goes off without a hitch, even if the chicken gets a little too crispy.

This cookbook, much like her others, is destined to become a kitchen staple for anyone who loves cooking for friends and family. And let’s be honest—who doesn’t love channeling a little bit of Ina in their own kitchen? Or, you know, you could always grab a supermarket rotisserie chicken, throw it in one of your fancy dishes, sprinkle some parsley on top, and pretend you made it from scratch (we all know you didn’t, but it’s the thought that counts, right?). Just get the book—it’s foolproof and full of Ina’s magic.

Reflections by Lauren

Standing Together for Democracy and Compassion

As many of you know, I wrote last month about the importance of remaining hopeful during this unusual election season. As an African-American, queer woman, I’m revisiting the topic of the presidential election because the stakes for our—and indeed every American’s—freedom have never been higher.

This election isn’t about the usual policy differences between Democrats and Republicans; it’s about whether we retain the freedom to debate those differences in a democracy. For the first time in our lives, we’re choosing between democracy and dictatorship.

In a few short days, we will decide if we will continue to protect democratic values or risk falling under authoritarian rule. This election holds particular weight for women and the LGBTQ community, who have already seen attempts to erode our rights. Our freedom to make personal choices about reproductive health, marry who we choose, live openly in our identities, peacefully protest, and even teach our country’s history truthfully could all be at risk. Authoritarian rule could strip away even our basic freedom to travel within and beyond our borders.

Despite the gravity of this moment, it’s also a call for people of conscience to unite. By focusing on our shared humanity and commitment to equality, we can shape a future where every person is valued and every voice heard. Voting is one of the most powerful ways to defend these values. Even if canvassing or phone banking isn’t for you, simply reaching out to friends and family—especially in battleground states—and encouraging them to vote can make a difference.

As we approach this critical decision, let’s channel our collective energy toward envisioning a future rooted in freedom, democracy, and compassion. We are strongest when we stand together, protecting the rights and freedoms of all. Now is the time to stand against authoritarianism and for a future that reflects our highest values. The stakes could not be higher.

Remember to be kind to both yourself and others.

With heartfelt gratitude, Lauren

Kick Off Party Season with Chef Mitch’s Coachella Harvest Bowl

Last month, I found myself at a fundraiser, and who do I run into but celebrity chef Mitchell Battersby. Now, you know me—I couldn’t resist. So, naturally, I leaned in and said, “Mitch, I have a chorus of readers who’d love a little taste of one of your recipes for our newsletter.”

Without missing a beat, he flashed his signature grin and quipped, “Something locally harvested, with fall in mind—but not too holiday-heavy.” I couldn’t help but laugh and say, “Yeah, that!”

If you’re unfamiliar with Chef Mitchell, let me fill you in. He’s basically the Palm Springs gay version of Ina Garten, which makes his recipe all the more perfect for our fall edition. As the host of Neighbors Cooking, he brings a warm, inviting spirit to every dish, combining the finesse of classic culinary training with the excitement of new flavors. He’s got this talent for making everything feel accessible, like you could step into the kitchen with him and whip up something fabulous.

Neighbors Cooking is about more than just food; under Mitch’s guidance, it’s all about the connections and joy that come with cooking. Known for his down-to-earth approach, he’s all about using food to bring people together, creating a harmony of flavors that brings neighbors closer. So this month, we’re in for a treat—a dish that’s as delightful as Chef Mitch himself. So grab your aprons and get ready to join in on his culinary magic!

Party season is officially here, and what better way to celebrate than with a dish that doubles as a conversation starter? Thanks to Chef Mitch, you can serve up the perfect fall recipe for your next soirée: Roasted Coachella Valley Harvest Bowl. Locally inspired and seasonally vibrant (look at those beautiful colors), this dish will get guests talking— So let’s give a big shout-out to Chef Mitch for helping us kick off party season in true Palm Springs style!

Sweet Baby’s Pairing

A nice Pinot Noir would be the perfect companion to this roasted bowl of beauty—its bright acidity and berry notes balance beautifully with the richness of roasted fall vegetables. The light tannins won’t overshadow the flavors but instead elevate the earthy undertones, creating a pairing as harmonious as Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong trading notes.

Try a Russian River Valley Pinot for that layered, harmonious finish.

Prefer white? An earthy, lightly oaked Chardonnay adds creamy warmth that pairs beautifully with roasted elements, smooth and balanced like Satchmo on trumpet. And for a double-duty treat, play a full album of Ella and Louis to set the mood as you prep set the stage for a memorable dinner party!

Empowering Through Music: Join Us in Making a Difference

As President of the Sunset Music and Education Board of Directors, I am learning about the scientific, societal, health, educational, and social advantages of music.

I always knew music was a game-changer in my life. It got me through pastor parents, three church services every Sunday, daily scrubbing of marble steps during the sizzling hot humidity of Baltimore summers, 21 hours of childbirth, law school classes that surely violated the Geneva Convention, and relationships so crazy only Patsy Cline records could soothe my soul.

In my higher education legal career, music helped me survive supervising university presidents who needed barely four hours of sleep and sent impossible, urgent requests in the midnight hour—whether I was on vacation or out of the country.

Yet, what I didn’t know about the value of music could fill a deep pond. The National Institute of Health’s (NIH) library contains studies detailing the impact music makes in our individual and collective lives. Music stimulates the brain’s limbic system, which controls emotions and memory, develops teamwork, builds leadership skills, and fosters pride in achievement. These skills translate into success in employment, educational excellence and contribute to the well-being of communities.

This is especially true in underserved communities like our Coachella Valley, where 93.7% of students in the Coachella Valley Unified School District are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged.

Help us support our community by funding needed scholarships, musical instruments, curriculum, workshops, partnerships, performance opportunities, and mentoring by professional musicians. The USA is currently experiencing dissension, division, vilification, and discord as the norm.

We know the power of one and of small groups. So, the Board is asking you to do what you can to turn the tide through music as an intervention.

OCTOBER UPDATES

Dear Friends and Music Lovers,

On behalf of the incredible musicians, vocalists, and myself, THANK YOU for joining us last month at Masters of Melody: A Tribute to Singers Who Shaped History. Honoring the legacies of Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, and Sarah Vaughan with you was a profound experience. Your energy filled the room, and it’s what truly fueled our performances, making the magic on stage come to life.

Performing with Rose Mallett and Lisa Lynn Morgan in tribute to these legendary women brought magic to the stage that was felt by all, and we couldn’t have done it without the love and support of each one of you. Those divas rocked, didn’t they? Did you like the opening “After Life Waiting Room” scene I wrote?

Thank you for being part of this unforgettable evening and for honoring the legacy of these incredible singers with us.

With all our gratitude,

Sweet Baby J’ai
