Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 2/23/25 – From February 19-21, 2025, the Filming Italy Los Angeles festival celebrated its tenth year in the capable and creative hands of director Tiziana Rocca.  The three-day festival’s engaging and very informative events were covered live by THT affiliates Valerie Milano, Elizabeth Perez, and Laura Wilhelm.
Three of the key films screened at FILA 2025 starred major international actresses playing strong and sensuous women.  Here THT will put a spotlight on these standout performances right in time for Women’s History Month in March
Paolo Sorrentino directed Celeste Dalla Porta in 2024’s PARTHENOPE.  Sorrentino is widely regarded as one of the finest Italian directors working today with comparisons often made to luminaries such as Federico Fellini and Michelangelo Antonioni.  His Parthenope is a free-spirited anthropology student who comes of age under the sunlit skies of Naples.
Gabriele Muccino directed Elena Kampouris in 2024’s HERE NOW.  Kampouris plays a strong-willed American tourist whose impetuous tryst with a new Italian boyfriend and his buddies turns into the most terrifying night of her life.  The plot was inspired by acclaimed Italian American director Martin Scorsese’s classic 1985 black comedy AFTER HOURS.
Mario Camerini directed Sopha Loren in 1955’s THE MILLER’s BEAUTIFUL WIFE.  Loren has been called a treasure of world cinema who appeared in many well-known films directed by her husband and son, Carlo and Eduardo Ponti.  The spirited comedy film was fully restored for the festival circuit.  Its picaresque plot was based upon the 1874 Spanish novel THE THREE-CORNERED HAT by Pedro Antonio de Alarcon
Hopefully these brief summaries will spur interest in these intriguing films from Italy’s present and past.  While none rise to the standard of epic classics, they all represent important aspects of Italian history and culture with stunning female leads at their centers.  Viva Italia!
