Announcing – Local Bookstore Up for Sale!

Diesel, A Bookstore at The Brentwood Country Mart in Brentwood in Los Angeles is up for sale.  The store opened in September of 2008, a month before the recession hit, and 6 months after the beloved bookselling institution Dutton’s closed its doors.

Originally from Oakland, Diesel has had 5 stores over its 34-year history.  It currently has 2 stores, one in Brentwood in LA, and the other in San Diego.  Known for its excellent curation and vigorous events program, Diesel works with schools, concert venues, nonprofits, and institutions along with its daily supply of a diverse range of books to its communities.

The store is extraordinary not just for the commitment of its booksellers, but also for the loyalty and support of its customers.  Brentwood is passionate about culture, reading, information, education, and society.  Their readership is engaged, often directly, in creating and sustaining culture, and that’s what bookstores do.

The owners, John Evans and Alison Reid, have over 80 years combined bookselling experience and have created internationally recognized bookstores.  After many decades of passionate hard work, they have decided to retire from bookselling and hopefully pass the store on to someone who will keep the tradition alive and the neighborhood provided for.

John and Alison, and the local businesses, families and readers who rely on Diesel, are hoping someone new will seize this opportunity to maintain a great bookstore in the area.

Inquiries can be made directly to the owners by emailing  [email protected].

They are looking for new energy, passion and commitment to serve this wonderful community with all of its reading needs.  They will help through the transition and look forward to keeping a great bookstore in Brentwood & Santa Monica, as the communities deserve.
