Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 11/10/24 – On November 3, the Los Angeles Philharmonic brought the vibrant traditions of Dia de Los Muertos to life at Walt Disney Concert Hall, with a closing night conducted by the renowned Gustavo Dudamel. This spirited celebration featured performances by the Tambuco Percussion Ensemble and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, unfolding a unique cultural experience that was both musically and emotionally captivating.

The evening centered on three distinct sonic ofrendas, beginning with Choros No. 10 by Heitor Villa-Lobos, a homage to Brazilian street performers. Next came Yanga by Gabriela Ortiz, honoring the legacy of Gaspar Yanga, a heroic escaped slave and revolutionary leader. Ortiz’s work, composed in 2019 for orchestra, chorus, and percussion ensemble, is imbued with African instruments and multilayered rhythms. Ortiz described Yanga as a tribute to “the greatness of humanity in search of equality and the universal right to enjoy freedom to the fullest.”

The concert’s finale brought the audience into the world of La Noche de Los Mayas, a striking film score by Silvestre Revueltas composed in 1939. Revueltas’ compositions—Night of the Maya, Night of Revelry, Yucatan Night, and Night of Enchantment—narrated an emotional journey through ancient Mexican heritage, beautifully fused with modern musical sensibilities. The performance’s rich tapestry of thunderous percussion and a haunting flute solo captivated the audience, embodying what poet Octavio Paz called Revueltas’ “deep-felt but also joyful concern for man.” As the evening came to a close, a vocalist’s evocative song of a lost child encapsulated the haunting themes of grief and resilience.

This Dia de los Muertos event was more than a concert; it was an immersive experience. Lyrics projected above the chorus brought a cinematic quality to the performance, enhancing its powerful narrative. Guests were also invited to craft their own nicho shadow boxes, explore ofrenda exhibits, and enjoy a complimentary beverage on the Walt Disney Concert Hall rooftop, all adding to the festive atmosphere.

This unforgettable evening of music, memory, and meaning was generously supported by the Frank Gehry Fund for Creativity.
