Bridge Philanthropic Consulting Applauds Supreme Court Ruling Protecting LGBTQ+ Workers from Job Discrimination

A Commentary by Dwayne Ashley, CEO, Bridge Philanthropic Consulting

Dwayne Ashley

On June 15, 2020, the United States Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision that firing an individual for sexual orientation or gender identity is a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The new ruling now gives LGBTQ+ employees federal law protection from workplace discrimination or firings based on sexual orientation or being transgender. The events that culminated in the landmark ruling began in 2013 when Gerald Bostock, the last surviving plaintiff in Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia, was fired from his job as a child advocate seven years ago shortly after he joined a gay softball league.

The High Court’s decision represents decades of advocates fighting for LGBTQ+ rights and marks a major step forward for the LGBTQ+ community, our country, democracy, and equality. Living in constant fear that being open about who you are could compromise your ability to earn income and contribute to the world through your talents is tantamount to existing but not truly living. I know. I was a successful nonprofit executive with family and friends who loved me, but I was also gay man who did not feel free to live and work as my authentic self for many years. When I decided to live openly and proudly as a gay man, it was liberating. I became even more committed to the social advocacy and social change work I had done most of my career. I founded Bridge Philanthropic Consulting from my vision to build a company to honor and support the outstanding social justice work performed every day by nonprofit organizations serving communities of color and LGBTQ+ initiatives. Our commitment to supporting social change drives the work BPC’s 58 passionate consultants perform to help clients achieve their missions, strengthen communities, grow their inspirations, and help to change lives. It was also important for me to build a company with a culture of inclusion and a place where people are welcome to be their authentic selves and contribute their unique gifts to society without fear of judgment or discrimination, or for my staff, job loss. BPC applauds the Supreme Court justices who voted in favor of this critical federal law and confirmed a basic truth that every human being deserves to be treated with fairness, dignity, and respect.
