Bird Flu Outbreak: Where We Stand and What You Need to Know

By Tequila Mockingbird

Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 3/3/25 – It’s tough to get clear, concise info about the ongoing bird flu outbreak, but I thought I’d share what we know so far. With things constantly shifting, it’s always good to be prepared just in case.

What’s Going On?

  • The Virus: The primary strain causing trouble in California is Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1. It’s been making its rounds, and while it’s mainly affecting animals, there have been a few human cases, which are keeping everyone on their toes.

  • Dairy Cows: Yep, you heard that right—this virus has shown up in dairy cows across multiple counties. Not exactly something you’d expect, right?

  • Poultry Farms: There have been outbreaks in poultry farms and get this: a rare H5N9 strain was detected in a duck farm in Merced County. Duck drama, indeed.

Human Cases:

  • Cases in California: A notable number of human cases have been reported, but most of these seem to be linked to direct exposure to infected dairy cows. (Yikes!)

  • Risk to the Public: The good news? The risk to the general public is still considered low. Person-to-person transmission is pretty rare, so there’s no need to panic—yet.

What’s Being Done About It?

  • State of Emergency: Governor Newsom declared a State of Emergency to help ramp up the state’s response. It’s like putting on the emergency brakes while we figure this out.

  • Monitoring the Situation: Both the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are actively keeping tabs on things. They’re not leaving any stone unturned.

  • Protective Measures: Protective gear is being sent out to dairy farms and workers to keep everyone safe while they manage this crisis. Safety first!

Important Things to Remember:

  • Pasteurized Milk Is Safe: If you’re a milk drinker, you’re in the clear! Pasteurization totally neutralizes the virus, so your glass of milk is still good to go.

  • Workplace Risk: The majority of human cases have been found in those working closely with infected animals, so unless you’re hanging out in a barn full of cows, the risk to you is minimal.

  • Ongoing Research: There’s a ton of research going on to understand this virus better and prevent further spread. So, scientists are on the case, working hard behind the scenes.
