When the collector cars began to roll, a new world record at public auction was set right out of the chute with the $18,150 sale of a 1974 Ford Pinto Hatchback. Another world record came later in the afternoon, when a 1969 Ford Mustang Grande sold for $27,500.
Just over 100 of the more than 1,800 vehicles on tap for this year’s auction had their turn in the spotlight today, with a 1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am that was the first car to pace the Indianapolis 500 race in stock form, 2007 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG convertible, a 1968 Chrysler Newport, a 1960 BMW Isetta 300 convertible, and a 1957 Chevrolet 3100 custom pickup among the favorites of Monday bidders.
Live television coverage on MotorTrend (formerly Velocity) has began, and fans can watch the entire Automobilia and Collector Car Auction via the live stream on Barrett-Jackson.com.
Action in the auction arena began with more than 300 automobilia items taking their turn on the stage. A number of beautifully restored gas pumps – Phillips Gilbarco, Mobil Oil and Gilmore Red Lion models from the 1940s and a Gulf Oil model from the 1950s – were kings of the day, all ending up in the top five. Also among the top five was a large “Drive In” neon porcelain arrow sign, its animated arrow flashing brightly.
