Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 5/10/22 – I’ve always been a fan of wrestling and I’ve always been a fan of burlesque. But to have these two join together at the hip: what a special event! Lucha va Voom is the California happening that started as a fun take on traditional wrestling. No, it’s not WWF and it’s not “Glow:” It’s something different. More exciting, more elegant, more punk, more tamales, and more merch. What’s not to love, it’s Lucha Va Voom!
The soundtrack for the evening’s music with stellar picking a lot of ’70s cholo Rock favorites. Everything is lowrider style, so you can’t help but love it.
The Mayan is the perfect place for this event to be held–back to the ceilings full of enthusiastic fans shouting the answer phase as the announcer shouts of Lucha. We all respond “Va Voom” which is the sound that the wrestlers make when they hit the floor. “kAPOW!” The next event will be Halloween at the Mayan, and we are here for it.
My favorite act was the chickens who defeated the big time wrestling dudes, a couple of amazing burlesque dancers, a fan dancer, and a balloon dancer. Lucha shows always feel like Disneyland in Mexico!
The street held Rows and Rows of brilliant and impeccable Lowrider automobiles, jalopies and hot rods, and all the ladies look like pinup models from 1940’s movies. It is always fun to step out of your shell and scream and yell for your favorite wrestler.
