We’re into a busy March with tennis, performing arts and much more. First, my blog for today:
Timothée Chalamet is suffering from foot in mouth disease. Last week he was in conversation with his “Interstellar” co-star Matthew McConaughey and basically said the opera and ballet were irrelevant.
“I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though like no one cares about this anymore.” He went on to try to recover: “All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there.”
That didn’t go over so well. Especially since he’s in a movie about table tennis, one of the more ballet-like “sports” out there, if you’re making a comparison. I mean who goes to a ping pong tournament??
And try telling our Palm Springs Opera Guild and the many dance companies that grace our valley’s Arts & Entertainment scene that what they do is irrelevant.

The BNP Paribas Open is in full swing at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, serving up heavy-hitting matches daily. You can catch legends and rising stars as they battle it out in “Tennis Paradise.” Once you’ve had your fill of the courts, get ready to strut over to Palm Desert as Fashion Week El Paseo makes its grand return on Friday. This celebration of West Coast style features immersive runway shows and cocktail receptions that bring a serious dose of sophistication to the desert.
On Wednesday, the high-voltage comedy of Michael Blaustein arrives at the McCallum Theatre, promising a night of sharp wit from one of the most popular stand-up performers today. If you’d rather spend your Wednesday singing along to some classics, don’t miss Michael Cavanaugh – Movin’ Out. Handpicked by Billy Joel himself, Cavanaugh joins The Desert Symphony to deliver a symphonic punch to all your favorite “Piano Man” hits.
There are plenty of other ways to mix and mingle: Kick things off on Monday at the DBA Mixer hosted by Desert Hand Car Wash, where you can spark new business conversations and support local scholarships. On Tuesday, head out for the Tastes and Sounds of Cathedral City to enjoy food truck flavors and live music by Leanna & The Free Agents. The community connections continue on Wednesday with the Mizell Center Business Partner Expo, followed by an electrifying Motown tribute at Solid Gold Soul. On Thursday it’s the smooth jazz and pop favorites of the McCallum Cabaret with Clint Holmes.
Put on your dancing shoes for the opening of Beehive: The ’60s Musical on Friday, a high-energy revue celebrating the powerful female voices of the 1960s. Also opening on Friday is the darkly glamorous Andrew Lloyd Webber classic Sunset Boulevard and the sizzling, jazz-filled outdoor production of Chicago. For even more theatrical magic, you can catch the ongoing brilliance of Steve Martin’s Meteor Shower, the reimagined Prohibition-era charm of Guys and Dolls, or the bold and cheeky musical Camp Morning Wood.
This weekend, you can join the satirical fun of the Brides of March Pub Crawl, catch the iconic sounds of Boy George & Culture Club, or attend the philanthropic Luck Be a Lady gala, and more…
