California Teen Knighted in Rome for Humanitarianism—19-Year-Old Sydney Thackray Receives Vatican Honor
ROME, ITALY – At just 19 years old, Sydney Thackray, a U.S. citizen and California native, has become one of the youngest Americans ever knighted under the Vatican’s blessing, honored not for aristocratic lineage or celebrity status—but for her extraordinary global humanitarian work.
Thackray received the title of “Dame” on June 1, 2025 during a sacred knighting ceremony held in a centuries-old Roman cathedral once home to Michelangelo. The event occurred during Rome’s Jubilee, a rare spiritual occasion that draws pilgrims from across the globe every 25 years. The ceremony was presided over by a holy bishop, blessed by Pope Leo, and conducted under the spiritual and philanthropic guidance of Prince Lorenzo de’ Medici, a direct descendant of Catherine de’ Medici and a global humanitarian leader.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be part of a community of people who have a passion for making the world a better place,” said Thackray. “That oath wasn’t symbolic. It was a promise.”
Thackray was nominated by Prince Lorenzo de’ Medici for her growing body of humanitarian efforts, including youth arts outreach, cross-cultural community building, and international service work.
“He’s someone who carries history with humility and purpose,” she said. “When I learned about the charitable work he’s leading, I felt called to contribute in my own way—and more importantly, to listen and learn from those already doing the work on the ground.”
While Thackray is best known for her lead role in the film Faith Fighter—which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival—and her upcoming starring role in a major thriller produced by GEMS Golden Eagle Movie Studios, it is her off-screen mission of compassion and community-building that earned her international recognition.
“You don’t need to be royalty to serve,” Thackray added. “You just need a willingness to show up, to care deeply, and to act.”
Thackray continues to develop youth-centered programs and is currently collaborating on global initiatives that combine storytelling, service, and cultural restoration. She has upcoming media appearances and speaking engagements planned to share her message with students and service leaders worldwide.
As a trailblazer for young women in leadership, Sydney Thackray represents a new generation rising—one that leads with empathy, impact, and service.
