Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 5/20/25 – George Wendt, the beloved actor renowned for his portrayal of Norm Peterson on the iconic sitcom Cheers, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his Los Angeles home on May 20, 2025. He was 76 years old. His death occurred precisely 32 years after the final episode of Cheers aired, marking a poignant moment in television history.
Born George Robert Wendt Jr. on October 17, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, George was the youngest of nine children. He graduated from Rockhurst College in Kansas City with a degree in economics before pursuing a career in acting. His journey into comedy began at The Second City theater in Chicago, where he met his future wife, Bernadette Birkett. They married in 1978 and had three children together. Birkett, parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church in Hollywood, is a friend of mine and we are trying to reach out to her. Bernadette, real-life wife, was the voice of Vera, his character Norm’s spouse on Cheers.
Wendt’s breakout role came in 1982 when he was cast as Norm Peterson on Cheers. Over the course of the show’s 11-season run, he appeared in all 275 episodes, earning six consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. His portrayal of Norm, the affable and perpetually seated barfly, became a cultural touchstone, with his catchphrase “Norm!” becoming synonymous with the character.
Beyond Cheers, Wendt’s extensive career spanned television, film, and theater. He made memorable appearances on Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, Seinfeld, and The Masked Singer. His film credits include Fletch, Airplane II: The Sequel, The Little Rascals, and Spice World. A seasoned stage performer, he also graced Broadway in productions like Hairspray and Elf.
Known for his humility, warmth, and sharp comedic timing, George Wendt was a cherished figure in the entertainment industry. He is survived by his wife, Bernadette Birkett, and their three children. The family has requested privacy during this time of mourning.
