Family Equality Gala Raises Over $400K in Star-Studded Celebration

Hollywood, CA (The Hollywood Times) 10/1/24 – Family Equality’s annual LA Impact Gala lit up Hollywood on Saturday, September 28th, raising over $400,000 to champion legal and livelihood equality for LGBTQ+ families nationwide. This star-studded evening honored notable figures, including Emmy-nominated actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson and his husband, producer Justin Mikita, as well as the founders of “The Rainbow Book Bus”.

The event, held at the historic Citizen News venue, was a celebration of powerful stories, moving performances, and heartfelt moments. Philanthropist and Bravo’s Real Housewives of Orange County star, Heather Dubrow, kicked off the evening with a generous pledge. Dubrow and her husband, Dr. Terry Dubrow, announced they would match the first $50,000 raised, adding an extra sparkle to the gala.

“I envision a future where every child and family can shine brightly, regardless of who their parents are,” Heather shared with passion. “Our family is grateful for your support in ensuring this important work continues.”

With nearly 300 supporters in attendance, the gala recognized Ferguson and Mikita with the prestigious 2024 LA Impact Visibility Award. The award was presented by the fabulous Jinkx Monsoon, a two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race winner. Monsoon praised the couple for their unwavering support and dedication to the LGBTQ+ community, reminiscing about their encouragement throughout her career.

Ferguson expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the importance of visibility in the LGBTQIA+ community. “Justin and I are proud to be role models for the younger generation,” he said, echoing the night’s overarching theme of representation and support.

The evening also celebrated the founders of “The Rainbow Book Bus”, Adam Powell and Eric Cervini, who received the Murray/Reese Family Award. Their mission to provide inclusive books to communities facing anti-LGBTQ+ legislation was highlighted, with presenter Richie Jackson emphasizing their proactive approach in the face of adversity. “They didn’t just post about the issues; they took action,” he noted.

Entertainment flowed throughout the night, with performances by drag queen Lyle, Angel Bonilla—the first transgender woman to compete on The Voice—and David Hernandez from American Idol. DJ Asha kept the energy high, rounding out the evening with a vibrant dance party.

Among the celebrity guests gracing the red carpet were Emmy-winning actor and Honorary Co-Chair Dan Bucatinsky, fellow Real Housewives stars Alexis Bellino and Gina Kirshenheiter, as well as marriage equality icon Jim Obergefell. Fox political analyst Richard Fowler served as the Social Media Host, engaging audiences throughout the event.

Family Equality’s Interim CEO, Alexis Kantor, took to the stage to emphasize the organization’s mission. “Family Equality is more than just an organization; it’s a community built on hope and resilience,” she stated, inspiring attendees to envision a future where every LGBTQ+ family is celebrated and protected.

The funds raised during the gala will directly support Family Equality’s advocacy, education initiatives, and affirming programs for LGBTQ+ families across the United States.  The gala’s success facilitates reinforcing the night’s goal of fostering a world of love, safety, and belonging for all.

As the lights dimmed and the final applause echoed, the message was clear: Together, we can create a brighter future for LGBTQ+ families everywhere.
