Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 6/25/24 – Known for their distinctive blend of glam rock and proto-punk influences, SKYE DAHL continues to push the boundaries of their musical style, captivating both fans and critics alike.
SKYE DAHL has been a prominent figure in the Swedish proto-glam rock scene, known for their flamboyant style and theatrical performances. Drawing inspiration from iconic acts like David Bowie, T. Rex, and the New York Dolls, SKYE DAHL has carved out a unique niche in the music world. Their previous releases, including the critically acclaimed album Stardust & Shadows, have established them as a force to be reckoned with in the genre. “Hypokrit” marks a significant milestone in SKYE DAHL’s career, reflecting both their artistic growth and their exploration of new sonic territories. The single is a dark, brooding track that delves into themes of deception and duality. Lyrically, it explores the masks people wear and the personas they adopt to navigate the complexities of life, making a poignant statement on authenticity and self-perception.
Musically, “Hypokrit” combines gritty guitar riffs with haunting synths, creating a soundscape that is both eerie and captivating. The track’s production is a testament to SKYE DAHL’s meticulous approach to music-making, featuring layered arrangements and a polished finish. Collaborating with renowned producer Magnus Lindberg, known for his work with bands like Cult of Luna and Refused, SKYE DAHL has crafted a song that is both sonically rich and emotionally resonant.
The music video for “Hypokrit” is a visual feast, steeped in dark fantasy and gothic imagery. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Erika Svensson, the video features a series of surreal, dream-like sequences that mirror the song’s lyrical themes. From shadowy forests to decaying mansions, the visual elements evoke a sense of otherworldly mystery and intrigue.
The video’s aesthetic is a perfect complement to the song, with its use of stark contrasts, dramatic lighting, and elaborate costumes. Symbolic elements, such as broken mirrors and masked figures, underscore the song’s exploration of identity and deception. The creative process behind the video involved a close collaboration between SKYE DAHL and Svensson, with both artists drawing inspiration from gothic literature and classic horror films.
Since its release, “Hypokrit” has garnered positive reviews from both fans and music critics. About Skye Dahl:
Leather and mesh meet fishnets, purple satin and studs, where Maria Brink, Doro Pesch, Prince and Bowie collide under one amalgamated grinning soul. Iron Age Gaga meets Rob Halford meets A Flock of Seagulls. And they ran. They ran so far away toward a beckoning limelight cast from The Sundance Festival and an opening slot for Theory of a Deadman.
Self-described as “Glam rock with Michael Jackson sprinkled on top,” Skye Dahl culls her flamboyant persona from a diverse assemblage of personalities aside from Jackson (whose repertoire she impersonated ravenously growing up) like Ann Wilson of Heart, Prince, the late Freddie Mercury of Queen and former Skid Row frontman, Sebastian Bach.
Born in Camano Island, Washington, now based in Austin, Texas, Skye Dahl slings a provocative harlequinade of punk, metal, Goth, new wave and New Jack Swing into her shock cabaret. Her exposition skills were built through theater and choreography, leaving an indelible mark upon productions of Sweeney Todd, Guys and Dolls and Carrie: The Musical.
Dahl transitioned into music where she seeks to blow the scene apart with her dramaturgical performance art. Her craft was momentarily put on the side due to family obligations, yet those trials and getting in tune with her Swedish heritage laid a significant foundation to Skye’s transfixing persona.
“I found my Swedish Grandfather,” Dahl notes, “and was also able to meet a ton of family on his side. It was a beautiful thing, because I felt a little more whole knowing them, if that makes any sense. I was able to hear and see just how beautiful Swedish people are. I learned to be proud of where you come from and those who have sacrificed so much for you to exist.”
