Los Angeles, California (The Hollywood Times) 7/31/2019 – “You have to give the world what they want and that way they will continue to keep coming.” Chef Pablo Kim of Asado & Chimi Argentine BBG told The Hollywood Times at the AltaMed Wine & Food Festival at LA Live.

This year, AltaMed Food and Wine Festival is proud to celebrate the rich history and flavors of Argentina at East LA Meets Napa! Argentina is the largest wine producer in South America and the fifth largest in the world, best known for its versions of classic red wines including Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Argentine wines are considered New World wines, but actually have a rich history dating back more than 400 years.

Last Friday, at L.A. Live, in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, East LA Meets Napa took us on a journey to the vineyards of the famed Napa Valley, where the quality of the wine reflects the deep roots of the many family vintners. Over 50 top LA chefs, restaurateurs, award winning Napa wine-producers and premium spirit distributors serve generous tastings while patrons enjoy live music throughout the evening. Now in its fourteenth year, East LA Meets Napa has become AltaMed’s premier fundraising event!

The event was everything it was meant to be.  Amazing food prepared by talented chefs.  The wine was delicious, red or white, many wine makers, sellers and wine pourers.  The wine booths were there to share their unique stories of how the wine gets into the bottles and in our hands to end up in our mouth!  Delicious wines for sure.

The Hollywood Times had an amazing time and spoke with several chefs and wine makers.

Russell Shinn, Broad MArket Sales Rep Riboli Family Winery

Russell Shinn (Broad Market Sales Representative for Riboli Family Wine & Spirits)

Russel told The Hollywood Times that Uncle Santo had a depot and he made wine for the churches and his nephew who was born in America, Stefano, who just passed away last week at 97 years old. He lived in Italy until he was 9 years old and came back to America and started making wine a met an Italian woman named Maddalena, who lived in Ontario, CA and her family was growing grapes and they met and were married.

San Antonio Winey was named San Antonio after their church in Italy, named St. Anthony, it’s not named after San Antonio Texas.

San Antonio Winery wine bottles

San Antonio Winery is the only winery in Los Angeles Russel told us. He showed us the different wines from their different wineries around California. Wine from Italy, that the family owns there and several wineries from around California. Stella Rosa is their registered name.

Our vineyards are now located in Paso Robles, Monterey and Napa Valley and we are proud to be one of the most awarded wineries in California. We invite you to become part of our family by visiting San Antonio Winery.

The Hollywood Times caught up with Chef Pablo Kim of Asado & Chimi Argentine BBQ in Brea

THT: Tell us about the food here at your booth.

Pablo Kim: This a full rack of beef, like the way we do it in Argentina. Those racks take a long time to cook.

THT: what was the first thing you made as a child?

Pablo Kim: Sandwiches. It depends on my mood. I like almond butter now and make that type of sandwich.

THT: Do you have a restaurant?

Pablo Kim: I do not have a restaurant, but that is something that I have been entertaining. Just catering and pops.

THT: Tell us what a pop up is.

Pablo Kim: Pop ups are when I take over a one location for one day. I prepare a full meal and people are invited to attend. We set up everything from the beginning to the end and we control the experience and try to keep everything Argentine. I do try to do something interesting, so that my repeat customers have something different to try each time.

THT: Are your pop us sit down or stand up meals?

Pablo Kim: my pop ups are sit down experiences and I have been experimenting with difference formats to be sure. I am still trying to figure that out and it is always different.

The Absolved – New Novel from Author Matthew Binder – Review

0

By Judy Shields

Hollywood, California (The Hollywood Times) 7/31/2019 – “In the book, it’s the sort of class that has been absolved of the burden of work, they are collectively called the absolved, a nice way of spinning, ‘you don’t have to work anymore, you have been absolved of the burden of work.’  I was trying to think of a title for the book and had gone through like 100 of them and then one day it just hit me, you already have the title in there, the people are called the absolved. The title for the book.” Author Matthew Binder told The Hollywood Times during a phone interview.

It’s 2036. Henri is a wealthy physician, husband, father and serial philanderer. He is also one of the relatively few people to still have a job, Automation and other technological advances have led to unemployment so severe that many people are no longer expected to work. They are now known as “The Absolved.” Meanwhile, it’s election season, and a candidate from a radical fringe party called the Luddites is calling for an end to the “Divine Right of Machines.”

So beings The Absolved, the dazzling sophomore novel from author Matthew Binder with one of today’s most exciting new small press publishers, Black Spot Books.

A timely mediation on the questionable economics and social side effects of the rise in automation and A.I., The Absolved follows Henri – who buys the rhetoric about the liberation of not having to work, just as long as it doesn’t apply to him – as he is displaced from his job, and subsequently framed for an anti-technology terrorist act by two Luddite sympathizers he’s befriended at a local bar. The prospect of Henri’s salvation comes at the cost of foregoing his guiding principles in life. This new vision for the world, after all, just might prove better than the technological advancements that, paradoxically, have left humanity out in the cold.

From partisan politics to data privacy, “curated” content to self-driving cars, farm-to-table to big box retail, Universal Basic Income to progressive tax policy, The Absolved spares not one and nothing in its irreverent, incisive examination of contemporary culture – and disturbing, often laugh-out-loud funny vision of what our world might look like in the not-so-distant future.

The Absolved is already being buzzed about by a diverse cast of bold-faced names, with its early blurbs from critically acclaimed novelist David Burr Gerrard (“a funny, fast-paced novel with its finger on this country’s dying pulse”), late night celebrity talk show host Seth Meyers (“a darkly funny look at the future we’re most likely stuck with”), constitutional law scholar and polemicist-extraordinaire Alan Dershowitz (“this book will keep you up at night wondering what our future holds.”), Columbia University professor John Cunningham, widely regarded as one of the most important academics in A.I. today (“a journey that feels as poignant and honest in today’s world as it does in Binder’s techno-dystopia”), and more.

“The impetus for writing The Absolved stemmed from a conversation I had with my brother, who’s an oncologist like the book’s narrator,” shares Binder. “We were discussing artificial intelligence and automation and the implications of a future where there simply aren’t very many jobs available.  My brother said, “people will just have to work harder to make sure they make themselves indispensable in the economy, the way I have.” I then pointed out to him that in 20 years A.I. will be making much better medical decisions than him. A couple of weeks later, I quit my job and moved to Budapest to write the damn thing.”

Whether you’re a cable news junkie, fan of Michel Houellebecq, subscriber to the journal Science, or just someone who enjoys the occasional episode of Black Mirror, The Absolved is a not-to-be missed novel that announces Matthew Binder as a provocative and prescient voice in American fiction.

Interview with Matthew Binder:

The Hollywood Times (THT): I heard you went out of the country on a vacation, where did you go?

Matthew Binder (MB) I did, I went to El Salvador for eight days for a little solo surf trip.  I lived in San Diego for really long time and now I live in New York, so I don’t get to surf very often.  Couple times a year I try to go to California to surf or go on a proper surf spot.

THT: When starting your book, I had to put it down, not sure why, maybe the realization that this A.I. and not having a job hit home, pick it back up and could not put it down at that. Let’s talk about that.

MB: The impetus behind writing this was a conversation I had with my brother.  We were talking about A.I., and automation, displacing people in the workforce and my brother, who is a cancer doctor said something along the lines of: ‘in the future, people will just have to work a little bit harder to cultivate a skill set that makes them indispensable in the economy, the way that I have.’  I’m like, dude, in 20 years A.I. will be making better medical decisions than you ever could. Even your job is potentially on the chopping block. That was the impetus of writing the book. Not to stick it to my brother!

THT: Let’s talk about moving to Budapest

MB: I was living in Albuquerque and working for a solar company over there and been there for a couple of years and I just had another book come and wanted to write another one.  I was watching an Anthony Bourdain episode on parts unknown on Budapest and the next day while sitting in a meeting, I Googled the cost of living index across the world. It indexes what does a dozen eggs cost, what does a pair of blue jeans cost, what does a one bedroom apartment cost to rent and Budapest was insanely cheap and by the end of day, I tendered my resignation and bought a one way ticket and left a couple of weeks later.

THT: Is that were you wrote The Absolved?

MB: Yes, I wrote it from June through December in 2016 while in Budapest, the heavy part of it.

THT:  What are your ambition for your writing career?

MB:  I never really had any ambition to be a writer, I guess in my 20s I was playing in bands a lot and at 27-28 I got my first like grown up job. I decided to start writing fiction and wrote a couple of novels that did not get published, I sent them out and they universally sort of missed the mark, they probably weren’t that good, I guess.  I would like to figure out how to make a living at writing. I have done some freelance work for writing treatments for commercials and now trying to work on a couple of screenplays. I don’t love doing my day job, but I understand that it is necessary. Every time I write something I always fear that I am totally washed up and there will be no more ideas coming.  I would like to be able to write more!

THT:  Do you have writers that inspire you?

MB:  Yes, of course, I would say my favorite contemporary writer is a French writer named Michel Houellebecq. He writes these sort of provocative, social criticism that are a little bit conservative in nature in some ways and I think he sort of sympathizes with a lot of sentiments that are not popular among the cultural elite that write and read about literature.  He upsets those type of people. I think the first writer that made me want to write was a polish writer names Jersey Kaminski. When I started reading his work, I had that Ah Ha moment, I didn’t realize there were books like this in the world. I was more of an outdoorsman type of guy, not academic. It wasn’t until later that I started being a veracious reader.

THT:  Do you write part-time?

MB: I kind of go at it like a job, almost.  When I wrote The Absolved, I quit my job and kept very strict working hours. I wrote from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., then I would take a break and go for a run or wonder around the city for a while.  Then in the afternoon I would come back and edit what I written that morning and I never worked from an outline and never really knew where I was going with anything. I would spend a lot of the evening just making notes trying to figure out what’s next.  I think just having a little something in mind, helps me get going. In the evenings try to figure out where to start in the morning. When I go back to New York, I did a lot of editing to The Absolved that I could do night and work my day job and do a full reset from 8 p.m until midnight.

THT: Are you still working on any screening plays?

MB:  I dedicate my weekends to that. I do two or three hours a day on the weekends.  During the week, I’m not as good at it.

THT:  What was the hardest thing about writing your book?

MB:  I think hardest part had been the ending.  I ended it at one point short of like a cliff hanger. But my friend, who is my go to reader and helps me with what’s working and what’s not working, his name is D. Foy, he is a novelist as well, he was like ‘Dude you can’t leave it like that,’. Deep down you always know when these aren’t working and when things are working, and I kind of knew that wasn’t the place to end it, but I didn’t have confidence that I could write a grander or boulder ending. Once he told me I couldn’t end it there, I was okay and it just came to me. I wrote the last 50 pages over a course of 2 or 3 weeks. I think that was the part I was most apprehensive about writing, because it sort of goes off in a different direction.  The whole book is a little bit absurd but more far-fetched than absurd.

THT:  Where did the character from your book come from?

MB:  The main character Henry, the emphasis was my brother, my brother is nothing like Henry in real life and the name of the bar in the book is Anodyne at there is an actual bar in Albuquerque that I would go drink.  The female bartender sort of served as the inspiration of the bartender in the book. On a physicality level and super imposed the story of her onto the woman bartender in the book and she is probably nothing like that in real life.  The only other character that had some sort of real-like inspiration was Serena. My Dad’s medical school friend was this guy that quit doing medicine shortly afterwards and became a wealthy real estate developer, an insane lust for money and power and so that was sort of the genesis of the Serena character, this old friend of my Dads didn’t really know much about him.

THT:  Where do you see yourself in five years?

MB: Oh man, no plans that I have made in my life worked out.  Wherever lives takes me. I hope that I am writing and can somehow make my writing less of a hobby and more of a career and focus more on it.  The trip to El Salvador, which I go to South American once a year to go surf, and every time I am down there, I think if I can figure out a way to make a life down here, like some a screen play, I could live down there and surf and write for a year at a time.

Matthew talked about a screenplay he wrote about a blue collar, middle American truck driver in the near future that loses his job to self-driving trucks in the new economy.  Sounds like a great story for a movie.

It was great talking with Matthew about his newest book The Absolved, so get yourself a copy of it today on Amazon or Matthew’s website www.matthewbinder.net

ABOUT THE FILM:

Life is idyllic in the quiet town of Vinci. The young genius inventor, Leo da Vinci (voice of Power Ranger Johnny Yong Bosch), is continuously tinkering and testing his inventions while his best friends, Lorenzo (voice of Bryce Papenbrook) and Lisa (voice of Cherami Leigh), help but keep a healthy sense of humor as he shoots for the impossible.

On their return from an outing to a nearby lake, the trio has a shocking surprise: Lisa’s family home has mysteriously burst into flames and, to make matters worse, the odious landlord is demanding that her father repay his debts in full — or agree to have Lisa marry his despicable son.

Leo has to catch his breath — he can’t lose Lisa, especially not like this.

Determined to raise the money Lisa needs, Leo takes his paintings and heads with Lorenzo and Lisa to the nearest big city, Florence, to either sell them or try to get work from a local master. In the town center, they happen upon a mysterious storyteller who not only tells a tale of hidden treasure but has a one-of-a-kind treasure map that he is willing to sell. Could this be the solution to Lisa’s troubles?

During their quest for the treasure, Lisa, Lorenzo and Leo are helped by a little girl, Agnes (voice of Faith Graham), a fearless and resourceful street orphan, and Niccolò (voice of Landen Beattie), a little Polish boy who has taught himself all there is to know about the stars and constellations.

Soon, our young heroes realize that they are not the only ones on this quest – a group of sinister pirates follows their every move with the intent of stealing the treasure for themselves.

Leo’s ingenious inventions, Lisa’s brilliant ideas, Lorenzo’s loyalty and Niccolò and Agnes’ clever input swirl into an exciting crescendo. Does the treasure exist? Will they be able to evade the pirates? Will Lisa’s father be saved? It’s a race to the finish, in this story of courage, bravery, and friendship: LEO DA VINCI: MISSION MONA LISA.

Irvine, California (The Hollywood Times) 7/26/2019 – “What do you consider more exciting? A photo of a sky diver floating in time and space or the ability to feel the exhilaration and adrenaline rush of actually hurling yourself from the plane and falling into the great abyss?  4DX gives you just that adrenaline rush…by bringing a movie to life with a host of sensory effects like moving seats that turns the movie viewer into plot participant!” Lance of Idyllwild told The Hollywood Times after experiencing Lion King in 4DX.

Man, did he say it all!

I had the opportunity to watch the Lion King last Thursday in RPX and thought now that was worth the extra price of admission. Well, now after seeing it in 4DX at the Edwards Regal Theater at the Irvine Spectrum, I can’t imagine watching these animated movies, redone in live action, any other way or any action packed movie for that matter.

What an amazing sensation to have been able to watch my favorite Disney movie sitting in those amazing 4DX seats. Lance said it all.  It transformed me from theatre seat to The Pride Lands where you run with the wildlife, feel the breeze in your hair, the rain on your face and the thunder in your ears and lightning in your eyes.  Now this is the way to experience an action packed movie!

Seat motion, wind, rain, lights, scents, audio techniques and 3D video all combine to give you a movie experience like no other…and is well worth the investment for movie magic you will never forget.”

New technology draws moviegoers into onscreen action

Regal and CJ 4DPLEX announced their latest 4DX location in the U.S. which is now open at Regal Edwards Irvine Spectrum ScreenX, 4DX, IMAX, RPX & VIP. This marks Regal’s fourth 4DX theatre located in California. This expansion is part of a larger deal with Cineworld Group, parent company of Regal, to bring the total number of 4DX U.S. locations in the coming years to 85 with currently more than 600 locations worldwide. Spider-Man: Far From Home was the first movie shown at Irvine Spectrum’s 4DX screen. Currnetly showing is Disney’s Live-action Movie Lion King.

CJ 4DPLEX’s 4DX immersive theatre technology enhances the on-screen visuals of action-packed blockbusters, transcending the traditional cinema experience through special effects including motion-synchronized seats, wind, fog, rain, lightning, snow, bubble, vibration, and scents. The result is one of the most immersive cinema formats in the industry, drawing fans into the action on the big screen.

“Regal is thrilled to continue our expansion of the 4DX experience for our California moviegoers,” said Richard Grover, Regal’s vice president of communications. “This immersive format creates an unforgettable cinematic experience for our guests. We’re continuing our commitment to offer top-of-the-line technologies and amenities in our theatres as we strive to make Regal the best place to watch a movie.”

The Hollywood Times spoke to a few people about their 4DX experience:

THT: What did you like about this 4DX experience?

Anais: It was my first time and I felt like we were there. I really liked the 3D and when the water hit you and that the seats move.

THT: Did you think the seats moved too much?

Anais: It was cool and I really like it and would recommend it to my family and friends.

THT: Did you think it was worth the price of admission?

Anais: I don’t know what that was (laughter). Dad named Robert bought the tickets.

He told me that is was well worth the price and this was his second movies. He saw Spiderman. He liked the movement of the seats.

Their children were so excited and I asked the parents if it would be okay to speak with their children and they agreed!

THT: How did you like the movie?

Daughter-little girl: I like it and like the seats. I like when they were fighting and it like when it lift you up. I liked the water. I want to see movies in the seats.

The little girl liked tiger and she was laughing.

The little boy liked the tiger Simba and the Pumbaa.

Kurt and Serina

Kurt, Serina & Judy after the 4DX movie experience

THT: Was this first time you experienced a 4DX movies?

Kurt: Yes this was the first time I experienced. The beginning title sequence I felt they need to recalibrate it, it was a little off, the timing. But after the title sequence everything else was on que and you felt so immersed and it felt like being in the VR simulation without the head gear on you.

THT: How did you feel about the water?

Kurt: The mist was good, but I wasn’t getting the effects, maybe I was too far back, like the waterfall scene. I didn’t get any of the water from the ending. Maybe I wasn’t sitting in the right spot.

THT: Did you feel like it was worth the price of admission?

Kurt: I would do it all over again and will be telling my friends to go and do and especially for the Lion King, it was the perfect immersive mist for that movie.

THT: So what did you think?

Serina: I think it was really cool and in the fight scene, I felt like it really enhanced things, you felt like you were part of the action, the misting was really cool and I liked the fog. During the lightning, the strobe lights made you feel immersed. It was a really cool experience.

THT: What would you tell your friends about it?

Serina: Definitely go and see a 4DX movie, it is a really cool experience. It is like a ride, like a 2-hour ride (laughter).

THT: That is a great way to describe it indeed!

THT: Did you think that it moved too much?

Serina: Be careful with your popcorn, I feel if you are going to see a 4DX movie, choose it carefully and be prepared Not to have your standard movie experience. Because if you are there to just experience a relaxing type of movie, it is not going to work out for you!

Last night, Orange is the New Black, Actress Jackie Cruz visited New York City to host the Zero Likes Given exhibition by Kahlúa, a pop-up exhibition that featured photography that received zero likes on social media from across the globe. Kahlúa’s Zero Likes Given campaign is a movement that encourages consumers to take their social media presence and ‘likes’ less seriously, because time spent worrying about likes is distracting them from living in the moment.
