On a typical day, I barely have time to “invest” in social media. My gay friends have a few threads with photos and videos of varied flavors of hot men (that’s how I first learned of Heated Rivalry). I’ll get notified that I’ve been tagged or need to defend something in a Gay Men of Palm Springs post, or have a friend tell me about something I should see.
Across our three media properties, we have dozens of social media accounts — from LinkedIn to TikTok. I was recently called out for not paying attention to X alternative BlueSky on @KGAYPalmSprings and had an offer for someone to post for us. That could be dangerous, but it’s tempting. We use software to share posts across various platforms. In fact, this blog will be automatically shared on places that I rarely have the time to view and comment — like NextDoor.
So it’s a wonder that our president had two hours to post 50+ times on his platform Truth Social Thursday from the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. How does a world “leader” have time to complain to the planet and still run the country? He doesn’t. A year in and this is where we are at.
The Desert Sun has a section-leading article on how Trump opponents are considering invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office. That’s a long shot indeed, but the mechanism is in our constitution.
Among his rants, of course, focus on our late night talk show’s “canaries in a coal mine”. Colbert, Kimmel, Meyers and Fallon are now targets of an FCC that wants to invoke a seldom-used FCC Equal Time Amendment. As of this week, the FCC issued new guidance narrowing exemptions for “equal time.” The agency clarified that late-night and daytime talk shows are no longer automatically exempt as “news programs” and must comply with equal opportunity requirements if their content is “motivated by partisan purposes”.
Even conservative radio host Sean Hannity opposes it, as conservative talk radio has been a safe haven for right wing politicians to get their point of view across while left-leaning late night shows have been critical of Trump and his minions.
These new FCC rules will put a chilling effect on both broadcast television and radio stations like ours. If we were to interview Brandon Riker on KGAY, for example, Ken Calvert could request equal time on John Taylor’s morning show. That would be must-hear radio!
